The Day the Sun Didn't Rise : NYE on the Far South CoastEarly on 31 December 2019, the Far South Coast community woke to an emergency text message. Fire was an imminent threat. It was just after 3am when Surf Life Saving Far South Coast Director of Lifesaving Cheryl McCarthy and the Bermagui club callout team got their first alert. The team moved quickly to set up their club as an evacuation staging point not yet realising the day that was about to unfold. Aussie Lifesavers Support New Gaza Surf ClubThe Palestinian territory of Gaza isn’t well known for its beaches. Its association with the Australian Surf Life Saving movement, however, dates back to World War II and two Gazan surf lifesavers are determined to set up a new Gaza Beach Surf Life Saving Club - with the assistance of North Steyne SLSC in Manly and the Gaza Surf Project. Cudgen Makes it Four Country Titles in a RowDespite a solid challenge from south coast club Warilla-Barrack Point, reigning champions Cudgen Headland have emerged victorious at the 2020 Envirobank NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships. Off Duty Lifesaver Hero in Bronte Mass RescueOff-duty surf lifesaver James McLennan, from Bronte SLSC, saved the lives of nine people who were caught in the notorious Bronte Beach rip and swept hundreds of metres out to sea. U.S Provides Direct Relief for Bushfire EffortWith the recent bushfire crisis attracting attention from around the world, Surf Life Saving NSW has been the recipient of an incredibly generous donation of around 40,000 particulate face masks. Redhead's Hero Nippers Win Award for Mass RescueA group of young surf lifesavers from Redhead Surf Life Saving Club in the Hunter region recently received a Rescue of the Month Award from Surf Life Saving NSW for saving the lives of three people caught in a rip. Australasian Police & Emergency Services GamesRegistrations open soon for the Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games to be held in Wollongong from 17 - 24 October 2020! Dry Lifesavers Take to the SkiesSLSNSW has had a long association with aviation over its 112-year history. Now a new breed of ‘dry lifesaver’ is being trained to use unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) technology to help keep beachgoers safe on the NSW coastline.
