No Images? Click here August 2018 Glenrose brain camp combines research and funChildren with cerebral palsy have fun in the kitchen at a camp held at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. Researchers are testing to see how non-invasive brain stimulation can enhance therapy for children with cerebral palsy in a three-year national research trial. Department member John Andersen, along with others from the Canadian CHILD-BRIGHT research network, developed a two-week camp to gather data for their study. The camp was covered by the Edmonton Journal, Global Edmonton, CBC (French) and an AHS video about the research. Pediatric medical education programs receive full accreditationThe Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) has granted full accreditation to all active pediatric residency programs at the University of Alberta. This successful accreditation is the result of the efforts of many people in our department, including the medical education administration team, program directors, trainees and faculty members. The work and time involved demonstrates the excellence and commitment to education in our department. Letter study aims to engage and empower patientsIsrael Amirav and parent participant Laura Saunders work on a patient experience survey. Israel Amirav, Division of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, was featured in the Women and Children's Health Research Institute 2017/2018 annual report. Amirav embarked on an electronic medical records letters study where participants received a letter about their child's condition and medical history after each appointment. Trainees, faculty, staff and guests gathered for the 2018 Trainee Farewell and Awards on June 6. The event celebrates those who have completed their education and those who receive scholarships and awards, as well as honours the faculty members who teach them. Sixty-seven abstracts were submitted and faculty and learners presented their research throughout the day. Patrick McGrath, professor of psychiatry from Dalhousie University, was the keynote speaker. Patient enrollment open for Alberta's Transition Navigator TrialA young patient explains some of the challenges she faced when moving from pediatric care to adult care, and what she feels might have helped her make the transition better. Watch the video. Transition to adult care can be difficult for youth with chronic conditions. Patient enrollment is open for Alberta's Transition Navigator Trial, a randomized controlled trial evaluating a patient navigator service to improve the transition from pediatric to adult health care. For most physicians, coming up with a new malaria treatment would be a career apex. For Michael Hawkes, it's just the most recent innovation in a career devoted to improving outcomes for children battling some of the world's most deadly diseases.
