Dear In this month’s edition of Policy World, we feature the InterMedia article, A New Model for Media Regulation. Usually only available to members, we choose one topical article each month to open up to all readers. In the piece, Krisztina Rozgonyi writes that “the future regulation of online media content concerning hate speech and protection of minors, viral spreading of fake news on social media and the fight against copyright infringement on video-sharing platforms has led to heated debates among stakeholders on regulatory propositions by
the European Commission”. Professor Rozgonyi gives an overview of the key notions and offers critical questions for debate on how to represent the public interest in regulating online media platforms and on the role of national regulators within this framework. The recent developments with the Audio-Visual Media Services Directive represent this desire, and the upcoming UK Chapter event on 11 July (details below) looks at the aspect concerned with social media regulation. Next week the IIC holds its Sydney Telecommunications and Media Forum, with the theme ‘Regulatory building blocks to drive digital innovation and competition in Australasia’. Regulators, industry, academia and civil society from the region will share views on the role of regulation in today’s world – with international speakers and
delegates providing comparisons and regional experiences. The programme for the event can be found on our website. From the modernisation of children’s TV rules in the United States, to the recent MoU signed by India and the European Union on net neutrality, Regulatory Watch includes a range of regulatory news stories from around the world. For the rest of this month’s news, visit Regulatory Watch on
our website. We hope to see you at a meeting soon.
