Throwback ThursdayA New Life in StrathfieldIn 1953, British widow Thora Donovan and her 5 children arrived to settle in South Strathfield from Buxton, Derbyshire. Their journey had been sparked by a stray black cat which had led them to a neighbour, whose sister and husband in Australia agreed to sponsor the young family. The sponsors were local couple, Olive and Peter Dawson of Liverpool Road. The family’s arrival in Strathfield was featured in the Good Neighbour newspaper. Here they are shopping in South Strathfield on their first day in Sydney. Thora gained work as a secretary and in 1956 remarried and moved to Cootamundra.
