Welcome to Indie Intel! An inside source for all things independent. Where we share tips of the trade and delve into insights that move production forward. Today's talk: Pre-Production
Create stories based on locations, props, or actors you already have access to. Knowing the connections you have and building upon those is a great opportunity as a filmmaker and to gather support for your project and open new connections. This also allows you to better work within your budget
The best place to fix an issue is at the start. Don't wait until you're a week out from production to try and address the problems. Put more eyes on it at the beginning and discuss with your team on what you can do and always have a backup plan (or two). A well-prepared filmmaker and their team can overcome any obstacles with the ability to adapt.
Once you have your idea, take some time to discuss potential marketing hooks. Is it the a fresh spin on the genre? A particular character people will be able to connect with? The overall location and vibe of the story? Knowing your hook will help you discover what audiences will enjoy your film the best and which sales/distribution company can help you get it to them. Use your marketing hooks to create great assets to help sell the film. Unit photography on set is a must. Having that completed makes creating new assets easier in the long run for your sales agent and distributor.
In the early stages of pre-production, consider where you want your film to premiere. Know what kind of festivals are best suited to take on the project once it's completed and if possible, acquaint yourself with festival directors. They want to see your movie just as badly as you want it in their festival!
