A Note from the Department Head

Greetings, finance students. I hope you are all staying well, physically and emotionally, and adjusting to online learning. Although we are learning together, your generation is probably more experienced with technology than any other. Remember to encourage your faculty as they continue to work hard to keep up with you and deliver a high-quality online experience without sacrificing content! I am hearing positive feedback from the finance faculty about the first week of online learning. A large part of that is due to you. Thank you for being respectful, courteous, and serious in your commitment to finishing the semester strong. I have two themes I would like to share with you this week: (1) Connecting and (2) Internship/Career opportunities and alternatives.

Ben Davis

Connecting

We continue to look for ways to connect with and support you during this time of “social distancing.” We would like to give a big shout out to Ben Davis, an alum, who met with the UT Investment Group (UTIG) this past week during a Zoom session. Ben discussed his career path to becoming an options trader and discussed personal finance advice for soon-to-be college graduates.  He then conducted an options trading presentation on the Volatility Index (VIX) by sharing his personal desktop trading platform in Zoom with eager student investors.  Lastly, he spent time meeting with students 1-on-1 to offer them advice and answer their personal questions. If you are not part of one of the finance student organizations, this is a great way to get connected and learn from those who have gone before you.

You may be wondering about the current environment for internship and career opportunities. This is the time to be creative and open to new ideas. The Haslam College is working hard to help you. Below are two important Haslam events and a list of possible alternatives:
