Throwback ThursdayWWII Italian POWs and InterneesAt the peak of World War II, Australia held more than 12,000 people in internment camps. These were mostly people of German, Italian and Japanese background. An internment camp had been hastily established at Moorebank early in the war, but most internees and prisoners of war were soon sent to camps in rural areas. The Moorebank site became a staging camp for those passing through. This photo, taken at Strathfield Station on 17 November 1945, shows Italian prisoners of war on their way to Moorebank. The war was over and these men would soon be repatriated or released. Image courtesy of the Australian War Memorial |
