A world of Art Around Tasmania

We have an extensive program of visual arts lined up for you this Festival with over 30 exhibitions and visual arts experiences to explore!

In the South

In Hobart, The Homesickness Project: Proof of Life at the Long Gallery, posits a theory; that the wold as our home is under threat and we are collectively, increasingly, homesick. From the classically beautiful to the delightfully curious, Revfrence [sic], compiles silk fans, historical books and colonial portraits of the past, alongside contemporary artworks at the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts. Light Memory Dark Ground invites us into a magical installation by Michael Schlitz at Contemporary Art Tasmania, and Remanence examines how fire shapes the landscape and the lives of people who have lived through it, at Domain House. Explore the depths of the medium of charcoal in Full Void and celebrate the culture, skill and tradition of Aboriginal shell necklace making in kanalaritja: An Unbroken String at the Tasmanian Museum and Gallery.

In Moonah, Crossroads explores the traditions surrounding the crossroads; seemingly benign intersections that inspire stories of the spiritual and mystical, traversing gothic sensibilities from superstition and folklore to ancient ritual and horror at the Moonah Arts Centre.

In Glenorchy, GASP All Night invites you to meet the artists proposing an ambitious new work (an island for Elwick Bay!) and enjoy a season of films screened throughout the night at GASP.

Visit Triabunna to embark on an orienteering adventure in Track, uncovering the stories of the Spring Bay Mill; a site steeped in history from Aboriginal Country to boom-and-bust industry.

In Rosny, Returning Lives at The Barn at Rosny Art Farm displays a series of 20 oil and ink paintings, and in Richmond at Oak Lodge Jane Elizabeth gives voice to the woman at the heart of an 1833 socio-political scandal that outraged much of the British Empire.

Discover some of the nine Sites of Love and Neglect scattered around the state, including BAC at the old Brighton Army Camp, Level Ground at the Kempton Oval, Trace at Geilston Bay, The Distance at Kelvedon Estate, and The House of Longing in Dunalley.

In the Northwest and West

In Devonport, a group of artists question idealised and romanticised depictions of the Australian landscape in A decolonial geographic at the Devonport Regional Gallery. Beneath the Waterline at the Bass Strait Maritime Centre, invites you to contemplate a time when access to settlements along the coast was by water only. One of the nine Sites of Love and Neglect, Resilience can be experienced at Tiagarra; a site of healing and resilience.

In Burnie, Backscatter – The Voyage of the Investigator at the Maker’s Space, draws together perspectives from science, art and the media to reflect upon a shared experience aboard a research vessel. Be blown away by the beauty of thousands of discarded food packets, brought together into a giant, luminous cloud in The Silver Lining at the Burnie City Council. Celebrate Tasmania’s major national printmaking award, the Burnie Print Prize at Burnie Regional Art Gallery.

At Cradle Mountain, Extreme speaks quietly and elegantly for lands pushed to their limits by fire, flood, neglect, isolation or proximity at the Wilderness Gallery.

Discover more Sites of Love and Neglect around the northwest and west of the state in Zeehan with Crocoite. Crocoite. Silver. Silver/Lead. at the West Coast Heritage Centre, and Gymnasia at The Pulp in Burnie.

In the North

In Launceston, Sawtooth ARI explores ideas of sentimentality in Sentiment, while what we eat is re-imagined, examined and interpreted in Imagining Food: Art, Aesthetics and Design at the Academy Gallery. Meanwhile, at the Queen Victoria Museum and Gallery, three artists explore the curious and remarkable connections between the islands they call home (Tasmania and New Caledonia) in Islands – A Speculation.

If you pop into the Earl Arts Centre you can also catch 21 Living Icons, a special portrait exhibition presented by Theatre North at the Princess that celebrates 21 subscription seasons.

Visit Breadalbane to uncover remnants of the past, veiled by grass and decayed through time, in Strata: Tracing the Past at Kerry Lodge.

Explore The Patterdale Project at the former home of colonial artists John Glover in Deddington, and discover one of the nine Sites of Love and Neglect in Westbury with Bellow at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

And finally, in an exhibition that any armature crafts-person will relate to, Nearly 50 Useful Things at Gallery Parnella in St Helens, takes us on a journey through the “all you can knit and crochet for the home” Golden Hands pattern book.
