24th January 2020A Message from the Head...It hardly seems possible that we have already reached that stage of the academic year when we begin to consider applications to be part of our next Upper 3 intake. For the second year running, we have run out of candidate places on the first assessment day and have a waiting list of candidates who are interested in attending on an alternative date should we have any places left to offer after we assess Monday's candidates. To all those attending on Monday, good luck, we are looking forward to spending the day with you and seeing what you have to offer in lots of different areas! Tilly-Rose builds Paris! It is one of the joys of my job to be able to discuss pieces of work with pupils in all year groups when they come to my study to have their Commendations signed! Today, one of my 'regulars' came to have a couple of Commendations signed off and, having tried and failed miserably to understand her excellent Spanish written work (I know one word in Spanish - Ola!), I took the opportunity to pop along to her Geography classroom to see her model of Paris. So impressed was I that I thought I'd share it with all of you. Incredible work Tilly-Rose, well done! Chinese New Year is upon us!Having thoroughly enjoyed L2W's assembly this morning on the subject of Chinese New Year, I thought I'd take the opportunity to wish all of our Chinese students and their friends and family a very Happy "Year of the Rat". I hope I've got my facts right in the video above, otherwise Mrs Day will be telling me off - as will Mrs Warren's class! Enjoy the weekend everyone. - Dr Tracy Johnson - Annabelle performs with Opera NorthA huge well done to Lower 5 pupil Annabelle Lee who has landed the opportunity to tour with Opera North in their current production “Street Scene”. Annabelle is a Scala student and has just started studying for her Music and Drama GCSE. Performing arts is definitely one of Annabelle's talents! The opening performance took place last Saturday at the Leeds Grand Theatre and has had great reviews so far including 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from the Times. See if you can spot Annabelle in the photos above from the 'ice cream song' and her solo in 'catch me if you can'. Annabelle has loved this experience so far and can’t wait to perform in Newcastle, Manchester and Nottingham with this fantastic cast. Oliver and Jamie are selected for North Yorkshire County Hockey Squad! We have more extra curricular sporting success to report this week in the shape of Oliver and Jamie pictured above! Both boys are currently in Upper 3 at Gateways and, as their wide smiles show, they are thoroughly enjoying being part of the Under 12s North Yorkshire County Hockey Squad this season ! It's Oliver's 1st year in the squad and Jamie's 2nd. They have plenty of training sessions and 3 full day tournaments each season against counties throughout the North of England. Good luck boys and enjoy playing at county level! Bake sale fundraising in Prep and High SchoolThe pupils in Prep and High School decide to hold a bake sale as they have been disturbed by the devastating scenes in Australia and wanted to make a difference by raising some money to help. I would like to congratulate Aliza Mudasar and Lucy Aldred for coordinating the bake sale in High School along with support from the rest of Lower 4 and the prefects to raise money for the same cause. Well done to everyone - in High School we raised around £175 and £260 was raised in Prep making the total funds well over £400. Here's what some of the Prep pupils had to say: "A BIG THANK YOU to everyone for coming to our bake sale on Wednesday and donating. We raised an amazing £260 in Prep for the World Wildlife Fund, to help them care for the injured wildlife that have been hurt in the Australian wildfires, restore homes for koalas and plant 10,000 trees." - Ella Womack (U2F), Eloise Newton (U2P) and Mia Womack (L1G) To find out more how WWF are supporting the wildlife in Australia please click on the link here. - Dr Sara Newton – Forms now on FireflyHopefully many of you will have by now accessed your Firefly account. This week we have used the 'return form' functionality for the first time. Over the next few weeks we will begin to replace all paper based return forms, where payment is not required, with an electronic form. This will reduce our use of paper and also alleviate the perennial problem of return letters being lost in the bottom of school bags! The address you need to use to log onto the Parent Portal is https://gways.fireflycloud.net Simply then follow the instructions for logging in for the first time (at the bottom of the screen). You will need to use the e-mail address you have registered with school. Once you have registered with Firefly, you can download the ‘Firefly for Parents App’ which is free. The code you need to activate this service is “gways”. Should you have any problems, please do not hesitate to contact me at karen.titman@gatewaysschool.co.uk - Mrs Karen Titman - Archbishop of York Young Leaders AwardsThe Archbishop of York Youth Trust is a charity based in York. In 2008, The Archbishop of York, Dr. John Sentamu announced his vision that rather than being part of the problem facing some of our communities today, young people were actually the answer. He felt that young people in today’s society often get a very negative press; often the only stories in the news about young people describe them as thugs, hooligans and vandals, and he believes that this does not reflect the majority of young people. Young people are our future and they can make big differences in society and our communities. To celebrate
the achievements of young people and to promote all the positive things that young people do and get involved in, he to set up the Archbishop of York Youth Trust as a charity to help and support young people across the north of England by providing opportunities for practical volunteering experience. The Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award encourages young people to: I am pleased to say that 25 members of the current Lower 5 received their awards in assembly on Monday. These awards represent their commitment to the scheme and demonstrating their leadership skills while carrying out three practical volunteering challenges. Well done to all involved. - Mrs Sara Holmes - Quick Links To Popular ContentArticles from ... |
