PEOPLE We say welcome and goodbye to some CSL staff! Arin Bandura, Administrative Assistant I am a temp agent from Interim Staffing Solutions. I have previously worked in administrative roles within multiple departments of the University for over a year now, and am very excited to be joining the CSL team now. In my free time I enjoy writing D&D campaigns, baking, and volunteering for events partnered with Santa’s Anonymous. Campion Cottrell-McDermott, Research Assistant Hello! My name is Campion and I'm a fourth year Linguistics (and CSL) student. I'm super thrilled to be working with Dr. Peacock as a casual research assistant in the coming months. I have previously been involved with CSL as a student intern, a Pathways program participant, and am currently an executive member of CCOS. Mandie Dening, HUM 101 Assistant Coordinator I am an enthusiastic learner. I love to have fun and laugh. Transformative relationships are the most important part of my life and work. I am an MSW Social Worker by trade and have experience working in the inner city, community mental health, and inpatient and outpatient settings. My experience ranges from working in sexual health promotion with sex workers and people living with cancer, doing education with students, and in leadership, program design, and evaluation in addictions and mental health. I'm thrilled to support, learn, and contribute to the critical pedagogical work that has been happening at HUM for many years. Ravia Dhaliwal, Student Intern I am a fourth-year undergrad finishing up my Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Political Science and Women's and Gender Studies. I have been a CSL student since my first semester on campus, and have been trying to do every CSL-related thing since then! I enjoy working with youth, travelling, and visiting Edmonton's coffee shops! Tine Tennessen, Administrative Assistant I am leaving CSL with a heavy heart as it has been one of the happiest times of my working life! Never, have I ever, had the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of sharp witted, open minded, intelligent and kind people. I will miss them terribly but fully intend to come by to harass them from time to time. I may be leaving CSL but I am not leaving the U of A. I am moving to the Department of Biochemistry, which should prove to be very challenging and quite different. HUMANITIES 101 Last year was another incredible year. Humanities 101 was able to offer four classes: one on-campus, an alumni class, another off campus at Amity House with the support of Capital Region Housing, and the WINGS of Providence class! This term we will be focusing our facilitating on our two core classes while evaluating the many different classes we have piloted over the years. Our goal is to better understand the best ways we can work within the community to support adult learning opportunities in Edmonton. An important change in Humanities 101 is that Kelsi Barkway, our long-time Humanities 101 co-facilitator, left for an incredible job opportunity in Toronto, congratulations! We are being joined by Mandie Dening. She brings a packed tool belt and we are excited to have her in the classroom! Welcome! EVALUATION NEWS Last term (Fall 2019) 705 of the students who did CSL placements completed end of term surveys. They worked with 76 different community partners. Here is what some of the participants had to say about their CSL experience: What impact did CSL students have on your community organization? “Students help our organization fill gaps that we could otherwise not fill - due to funding shortages etc. They also bring a fresh perspective.” PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT Skillcity Institute is pleased to be working with Community Service-Learning students for a second term. Our programming focuses on mentoring youth in the areas of career and enterprise education. CSL students are involved specifically with our ICE Program – Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship – a targeted program for children and youth who typically face greater barriers to career opportunities (girls, racialized and/or low-income youth, as well as first generation post-secondary students). In this program CSL students serve as role models, mentors and sources of information on STEAM careers and industries. We are also looking forward to our work with Marketing students this year, who will explore how we can improve our marketing of, and communications around, the ICE Program. |
