As Matron-in-Chief with the British Expeditionary Force, by 1918 she was in charge of more than 6,000 nurses. Born in Sydney in 1859, Emma Maud McCarthy was the eldest child of solicitor, William Frederick McCarthy. The family lived at Seven Oaks Farm, Strathfield during the late 1870s. Matron McCarthy introduced anaesthetic nurses and was one of the first to recognise the condition of shell shock. She was highly decorated and received her Dame Grand Cross in 1918. |
