SLDL November News

The SLDL office hopes to engage students, faculty, and staff in ways
that promote and develop an inclusive and diverse environment.
We oversee student clubs and the Graduate Student Council, promote student engagement, host events and workshops related to diversity and leadership, advise international students, promote mentorship, and manage health insurance enrollment. Chaplains Office

They serve as confidential spiritual counselors, emotional leaders, and provide ethical leadership to the campus community at large.

Dia De Los Muertos

Fright Night: The Role of Gender and Race in Horror Films

Tuesday, November 10 | 12 PM - 1 PM 

Halloween may have passed but the horror genre is here to stay. This panel discussion will include students from the School of Arts and Humanities and center on an examination and critique of the horror genre and its promotion of gender-based stereotypes and racial injustice. This panel will be facilitated by staff members David Altman, MA in Humanities with a concentration in Cinema & Media Studies and David Estudiante, Assistant Director of Student Engagement.

Veterans Day

Wednesday, November 11 

CGU will be open, but we can still find ways to honor our veterans! 

Here's a (non exhaustive) list of virtual ways to support and honor veterans: 

  • Fly the American Flag
  • Have food delivered or leave groceries at their door
  • Send a card or letter to a hospitalized/homebound veteran
  • Call service members and veterans to say thank you
  • Share what your veteran and/or freedom means to you on social media
  • Hear veterans' stories in their own words either by asking people you know or going to StoryCorps' podcast.

Fresh Check Day  

Wednesday, November 11 | 12 PM - 12:30 PM, 5 PM - 5:30 PM 

The countdown is on! CGU & KGI will hold our fourth Grad Fresh Check Day in a couple weeks! Save the date by marking your calendar now for November 11, 2020 at 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm (30 minutes each). Check in on your mental health at this fun, virtual, fair-like event, featuring music, interactive games and activities, great prizes, and more!

Information Literacy and Library Services: Critical Tools for Graduate Student Success​

As a graduate student information literacy is crucial to one’s success. Jennifer Beamer, Scholarly Communication Librarian and Kimberly Jackson, STEM Librarian will facilitate a one hour session on information literacy as a set of abilities that graduate students must develop as they navigate the ability to locate, evaluate information effectively required to engage in their field of study. Beyond Extractive Renewables: Addressing Ethical Dilemmas in Decarbonization

Saturday, November 17 | 7 PM - 8 PM

GenUN is a national initiative of UNA-USA to engage and energize young supporters around the work of the United Nations and we are proud to have a chapter here at the Claremont Colleges. 

One of our events will feature a guest lecturer, Dr. James J. A. Blair, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography & Anthropology at Cal Poly Pomona, who will discuss ethical dilemmas involved in environmental decision-making, particularly in the context of decarbonization.

EmPOWER center details

EmPOWER Center Services 

The EmPOWER Center offers the following services: 

  1. Phone/Dixy.me sessions with Project Sister counselors. To schedule, please call (909) 607-0690. Ongoing sessions are available to students currently receiving EmPower counseling services OR to students living within CA. Students living outside of CA receive intial emotional support and referrals in their local communities (in keeping with CA mental health licensing laws).
  2. Phone/Zoom sessions with the EmPOWER director, Rima Shah (she's a confidential advocate). To schedule, please call (909) 607-2689 or email rshahempower@claremont.edu (available to students no matter where they are located in the world). 
  3. EmPOWER's 7C-wide educational programs will be offered via Zoom, videos, and more.

Latinx Mental Health Workshops 

We acknowledge all of the changes that are taking place in your lives. As such, CLSA, the Chicano Latino Student Affairs Office teamed up with Dr. Dana Reyes, Monsour Psychologist, to provide our students wellness workshops. Dr. Dana Reyes specializes in strengths-based therapy, while taking into account cultural, social, and systemic factors. 

Check out these two workshops occurring on the 1st and 3rd Monday from 2 PM to 3 PM. 

  • November 2: Mindful Eating
  • November 16: Yoga for stress relief
