Click here February 2019 Edition Creating Video Games for More Than Just Entertainment It's not uncommon to find today's youth spending extraordinary amounts of time on their devices or plugged into a video game. But what would happen if there were a game that not only entertained but also was designed to get thousands of players creating? Students Attend Symposium with Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley For teens, exploring a new culture, language, or a unique set of traditions or researching a global issue from diverse perspectives can be exciting, even admirable. These pursuits demonstrate a curiosity for how others live, cultivate empathy, and lead to problem-solving discussions. Six Students Compete in Bouldering CompetitionSix Wasatch Academy students of all skill levels and backgrounds attended The Mine Bouldering Gym located in Park City to compete in their winter bouldering competition series. Climbing is an individual sport. The kids train as a team but when they show up at a competition, they are competing individually (think golf or swimming or tennis). Alumni Updates Gabi Cheng '17 – Gabi was recently named to the Men’s Team USA Soccer Team for the 2019 Summer Pan American Maccabi Games. He is currently studying at Westminster College and visited campus this fall. We are all excited for him to showcase his soccer skills while representing Team USA in Mexico City this summer. Eddie Llovio '10 – Eddie recently caught up with us via email. He is currently living in New York City and works for CBS on the popular primetime show called Madam Secretary. Anna Munoz Farre '11 – Anna is finishing her studies at MIT where she has been doing research for her Master of Science degree in Industrial and Biomedical Engineering. Michael Magid '97 – Is a comedian, actor, and writer who put out a new comedy album this past spring called It's Not What It Looks Like. He also stars in the situational sketch comedy High Land available to stream on Amazon. Honoring Herbert David Sowe Herbert David Sowe, class of 1969, sadly passed away on February 18, 2019. This past fall he sent us a story recounting his experience at Wasatch Academy. Avid Outdoorsman and Energetic Educator: Ryan Anderson Ryan is originally from Winchester, Massachusetts, a small suburb of Boston. After accumulating years of outdoor recreational experience through summer camps, personal adventures, and the National Outdoor Leadership School, Mr. Anderson realized he had a passion for experiential and outdoor education and wanted to incorporate them together in the classroom. Students Share Tibetan Culture at Local High School Culture is a strong part of people's lives. It influences their views, their values, their humor, their hopes, their loyalties, and their worries and fears. Being culturally aware is becoming an important skill to have in both the workplace and in everyday life. Students Receive High Honors at Springville Art Show The creative dedication, prowess, and artistic abilities of Wasatch Academy students shined once again during the 47th annual Utah All-State High School Art Show hosted by the Springville Art Museum. The Poetry Project Students within Ms. Wolf's English II class studied poetry in depth while creating unique, multimedia presentations of the poetry they researched. Each student selected a poem and then illustrated the poem with a variety of mixed media including glass, paper, paint, animal skulls, and more. Quick News Students attend the Brigham Young University Business Language Competition For several years now the Marriott School of Business' Global Management Center has hosted a High School Business Language Competition in Spanish. This year they added French, Mandarin, and Arabic. Over a three-week period, students were tasked with researching the company Cotopaxi, their product Del Dia Backpack, and the market trends to create a business plan marketing the product to young adults in Japan. The students then had to study the target consumer in order for the plan to be considered a viable business plan. This was a collaborative effort between the World Language Department and Mr. Moffett's business classes. The students represented Wasatch Academy very well with their presentations and our French group of Leo, Fousse, and Alex ended up in 3rd place in their division. It was a superb learning experience for all. Inés, Lovett, and Emmanuel Jauregui represented the Spanish-speaking team. Utah High School Dance Festival This past weekend, dance teacher Ms. PattiJo Hopes took the dance students to the Utah High School Dance Festival in Draper at Corner Canyon High School. This festival was hosted by the Utah Dance Education Organization (UDEO) and is dedicated to a full day of sharing, learning, growing, and performing. The dance students had an opportunity to present a dance that was choreographed by senior Ami Konoike and junior Micah Inglish and was adjudicated by prestigious dance choreographers and teachers. As a result, Wasatch Academy dancers received a mark of excellence and a trophy for their efforts. The students exceeded Ms. Hopes expectations as they were up against large dance companies that practice 10 or more hours a week. The Wasatch Academy students had only the time to practice 45 minutes a day. “I am very proud of them,” said Ms. Hopes. Sports UpdateBasketball Boys' Orange/Black Team The Boys' Orange & Black Team went a perfect 6-0 for the month of February including an overtime thriller against American Heritage. Swim Team Swim season has now wrapped up. Coach Rasmussen states, "The one word that I have used most often to describe this year's season is fabulous. It has been so nice to practice in Mt. Pleasant's new pool. |
