Kimmel Makes Emotional Return to ABC; Was It Really a Concert if There Was No Special Guest?; Anime Gives Gen Z a New Symbol of Resistance

By Nat Ives

Good morning. Today, President Trump threatens ABC as Jimmy Kimmel goes back on the air; music acts feel the pressure to produce famous guests at every show; and the ‘One Piece’ jolly roger pops up at protests from Nepal to the U.K.

Jimmy Kimmel returned to ABC Tuesday night after a four-day suspension for his remarks on the killing of Charlie Kirk, choking up as he told the audience that it was never his intention “to make light of the murder of a young man” and criticizing the Trump administration for threatening comedians and the press, Joe Flint and Katherine Sayre report.

“This show is not important. What is important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this,” Kimmel said. He called President Trump’s attacks on the news media and late-night hosts such as himself “anti-American.”

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr suggested last week that the agency could move against the broadcast licenses of ABC-owned stations. Major affiliate owners and Disney quickly pulled the show.

Trump on Tuesday night, before Kimmel’s return aired, threatened ABC over its decision to allow the show to come back. He accused Kimmel of being an arm of the Democratic National Committee “and, to the best of my knowledge, that would be a major Illegal Campaign Contribution.”

“I think we’re going to test ABC out on this,” Trump said. “Let’s see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars. This one sounds even more lucrative.”

Related: Nexstar and Sinclair, whose ABC affiliates collectively reach 22% of U.S. households, said they still planned to replace Kimmel’s show. [WSJ]

Bring ‘Em Out

Music acts are trying to provide viral moments and justify concert ticket prices by turning special guests into routine events, Elias Leight writes.

Olivia Rodrigo this summer has been joined onstage by Weezer, David Byren and Robert Smith; Zach Bryan scored a Bruce Springsteen cameo; and Sabrina Carpenter brought out Earth, Wind & Fire at Lollapalooza.

Guests don’t have to be musical: Penélope Cruz introduced a Bad Bunny song this August, while Natalie Portman and Kate Hudson have danced on stage to “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out” at Role Model shows.

“It’s fun, and now everybody expects it,” says Marlene Tsuchii, co-head of international touring at CAA, who works with Carpenter. “If you don’t have special guests, they’re like, ‘Oh, really?’ They’re disappointed.”

Global Language

Gen Z protesters around the world are raising the distinctive jolly roger from “One Piece,” the long-running Japanese manga and anime TV show about Monkey D. Luffy and his crew of pirates, Jason Douglas and Junko Fukutome report.

Its growing presence shows the cultural heft among younger generations of Japan’s prodigious manga and anime output, a shared trove of stories read on phones and streamed online that are hugely popular around the world.

“I think it’s inevitable that protest movements that are led by young people are going to incorporate anime imagery,” said Matt Alt, author of “Pure Invention,” a book on modern Japanese culture and its global appeal.

Populated by young protagonists struggling against adult authority figures, “anime is a lingua franca for young people all over the planet,” Alt said.

The “One Piece” comic has sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide since Luffy appeared more than a quarter of a century ago and the show has aired more than 1,000 episodes. Netflix is producing a live-action version.
