NFDC President joins Temporary Works Forum (TWf)As always, but especially in light of recent industry incidents affecting NFDC members, Safety and Best Practice is high on NFDC’s agenda. NFDC President, Holly Price, attended the Temporary Works Forum yesterday, 21st October, at One Great George Street, London, to participate in expert seminars on a range of key topics, including; - The Need for
Education in Temporary Works
- Process – the design, checking, installation, use, standards, research and responsibility of Temporary Works
- Reporting and Learning
- Scaffolding – what good might look like
- The growth and development of below-ground proprietary propping systems
- The Temporary Works Coordinator – Administrative or Technical?
The event marked the 10 year anniversary of the Temporary Works Forum
(TWf) – a not-for-profit membership organisation which exists to promote best practice in the construction industry. NFDC will work with the President to disseminate learnings from these seminars to the NFDC membership as soon as possible.
DEMOLITION CONTRACTORS NEEDED - STEEL RE-USE PROTOCOL PROJECT NFDC CEO, Howard Button, attended a Steel Construction Institute (SCI) event last week, where discussions were focused on best practice to preserve as much steelwork as possible for re-use. The SCI are appealing for involvement from NFDC demolition contractors in 3 key areas. Can YOU help by giving feedback, testing the protocol and/or working with SCI on site?

NFDC MEMBERS HIT HOME RUN WITH NOTTING HILL GENESIS FRAMEWORK 8 Companies have been confirmed as 'big name winners' for the Housing Association's whopping £50m demolition framework, each being an NFDC Corporate Member! The project is estimated to last 4 years and will involve high value demolition and enabling works.

CENTRAL DEMOLITION TO HOST FREE MENTAL HEALTH EVENT, 1ST NOVEMBER Big shout out to Central Demolition for their commitment and investment in Mental Health. In conjunction with Perses, Central have organised a Mental Health Workshop Seminar at Falkirk Football Club. You are invited to join and help challenge the stresses and behaviors which fuel the high prevalence of poor mental health in the Construction Industry.

CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY TO FACE FREELANCE TAX UPHEAVAL Next April, HMRC are changing the rules for Contractors employing professional freelancers. Currently, workers can be employed via a personal service company which determines which tax rules apply. In 2020, the responsibility will fall to the contractors to determine the employment status of their freelancers, causing many to opt for PAYE.

HS2 CONTRACTORS ROLL OUT COMMON PRE-QUAL SYSTEM Working alongside Build UK and the Civil Engineering Contractors Association, four of HS2's biggest Contractors have developed and adopted a new pre-qualification system. Their hope is to reduce the costs and time spent by suppliers on tendering for work on what is estimated to equate to 11% of the country's infrastructure spend.

CITB TEST CENTRE EMPLOYEES CAUGHT ON THE TAKE Following raids at safety test centres in Cheshire, Essex and London, a number of employees were found to be accepting cash payments in return for assistance with tests. Three individuals have been arrested for Fraud Act Offences, with further construction workers subsequently being detained on the suspicion of working in Britain illegally.
