NEWSLETTER - 29 JUNE 2017 CONTENTS SPOTLIGHT - ONE YEAR ON FROM BREXIT, OLIVIER CAMPENON SPOTLIGHT ONE YEAR ON, A NEW BREXIT PHASE BEGINS The Brexit negotiations have (at last!) begun. Both parties, Great Britain and the EU, have taken pains to clarify that they would enter negotiations with a “constructive and positive mind-set”. But we all know that this will be anything but easy. Time is ticking to achieve something that has never been done before. Michel Barnier and his team, representing the EU, and David Davies for the UK will be in the driving seat for the next 15 months, maybe even longer. If we look back, what has actually happened over the past year since the Brexit vote? EIGHT ADVISORY: 2017 UK COMPETITIVENESS REPORT One year after the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, we wanted to analyse how this has affected the UK’s ability to compete on the international stage and what it needs to do to remain attractive to investors in the coming months and years. Under the Government’s timetable, the expectation is that by the end of March 2019, the UK will have ceased to be a member of the EU. Whilst the precise terms of the UK’s Brexit withdrawal remain unclear, what is unequivocal is that investors and businesses, wherever they are located, should take note. As a global financial hub, a diminished City of London could have profound implications for other financial centres and for international businesses looking to raise finance. The overwhelming message emanating from our analysis is that we need to break down the invisible Brexit wall to re-asses the position which the UK is in and where it wants to be. The UK has established itself as a leading financial services centre with some of the strongest foundations for continued success across the globe. These assets should be the founding stones for a new generation of globalization, rather than a barrier to progress as it risks becoming. RECENT EVENTS IOD: CYBER SECURITY: MANAGING RISK, Tuesday, June 27, 2017 Cyber security was the very topical subject of our latest breakfast conference co-organised with the Institute of Directors and held at France- Amériques on 27th June 2017. Experts and founders of Securitude, Yul Bahat and Michael Benton, gave a dynamic presentation, punctuated by many questions from the gathered guests, outlining various examples of possible cyber security attacks and how best to tackle them. What was really underlined was the human aspect of a cyber security attack, the creativeness of the hackers and the weak link in any company: which is each and every employee.
