An Unexpected Weight-Health Connection Family medicine researcher uncovers a possible connection between Body Mass Index and risk of developing dementia. As a PhD student in the Department of Family Medicine studying risk factors for the development of dementia, Anh Pham has made an unexpected discovery; could having a high Body Mass Index (BMI) in late middle-age be a protective factor against dementia? Pham, who is a physician with a masters degree in public health, made this discovery while researching dementia, the suspected culprit behind her late grandmother’s declining health in later life.
Following her grandmother’s death, Pham had become interested in dementia, wondering how to improve the quality of life for those affected by the condition.
Family Medicine Research Day
Wrap-up The Department of Family Medicine’s annual Family Medicine Research Day took place on June 7, 2019 and this year’s event provided unique perspectives from local, provincial and national levels. Plenary speaker Dr. Ginetta Salvalaggio spoke about how her involvement with the Edmonton Inner City Health and Wellness program has helped her find space in her work for creating change and being just. Along with this, she addressed the challenges involved in doing research in a non-traditional population and how this not only encourages her to think
differently and continue studying, but also keeps her excited about the work she is doing. Following the morning’s presentations, Dr. Paul Humphries presented U of A medical student Tanya Shuman with the Patricia Ann Peat Residency & Student Family Medicine Enhancement Fund. Thank you to the day’s participants, who together delivered 12 oral presentations and 13 poster presentations on a wide variety of research topics.

Stephanie Chamberlain Stephanie Chamberlain is a postdoctoral fellow with Dr Andrea Gruneir from the Department of Family Medicine and Dr Susan Bronskill (Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences, Toronto). Her postdoctoral work is funded by an Alzheimer Society of Canada postdoctoral fellowship. Her research aims to assess the health service use of socially isolated or lonely residents in Alberta’s supportive living facilities. She recently completed her PhD in the Faculty of Nursing here at the University of Alberta. Her dissertation examined the prevalence, characteristics, and unmet needs of long-term care residents under public guardianship. She
has been actively involved in several local groups including the Alberta Association on Gerontology and was the President of the Canadian Association on Gerontology Student Association. In her spare time, she enjoys watching the Great British Bake Off and making a mess in her kitchen.

She has been with the University of Alberta for over ten years, from a graduate student to a variety of roles working in the Faculties of Rehabilitation Medicine and Education. She received her Ph.D in Education focused on Second Language Acquisition and Learning from University of Alberta in 2012, and previously completed her Master of Education. She brings to the Department with extensive research experience, as well as experiences in research coordination, project management and administrative support. Vivian
is an avid reader who loves reading with her two young children. In her spare time, she enjoys hot yoga, jogging with her 2-year old German Shepherd and cuddling with her sweet chubby cat.
