A Message From Service Captain, Bella Poll
As part of Make a Difference Week, we have been showcasing change makers within our society. Eating With Our Eyes: Food WasteOn Monday, we were fortunate to have PLC Old Collegians, Nicole Giblett, Lucinda Giblett and Jennifer Keen, as guest speakers at the International Women's
Day Breakfast. One of the things I found most interesting in our discussions was the issue of 'eating with our eyes' and how this is creating a nation-wide issue of food being disposed of because it's not cosmetically perfect.
This issue was also raised last week when I went to a talk by 2040 film director, Damon Gameau. He said that “if food waste were a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases.” Small acts to reduce food waste can make a big difference. In my house, we compost all our food scraps and ensure that all our food is stored properly (without disposable plastic!) to ensure it lasts its maximum life span. Jenifer Keen told us her rule - "LOOK in the fridge before going to the shops, BUY
only what you need, STORE your food properly and COOK where you can".
Waste AuditOn Tuesday, we had some fantastic girls help out in the waste audit. The results haven’t been finalised yet, however I'm sure our waste consumption has decreased following the waste-wise initiatives that have been implemented within the School over the past year.
Millennium Kids: Making Toothpaste and Deodorant During yesterday's lunchtime, Catrina and Bella from Millennium Kids taught us how to make deodorant and toothpaste! We learnt how to put the correct rubbish into the correct bin and also made pledges on how we are going to reduce our personal environmental impact. Millennium Kids is a
not-for-profit youth-led environmental organisation that empowers young leaders. I have been involved with the organisation for quite a few years and the change they have been making is so inspiring. It was also great to see some of the Junior School girls come across and get involved in the activities! Farmers Across Boarders Movie Night FundraiserLast night, we had a showing of the film 2040, an optimistic film by Damon Gameau about what our
world could be like in 2040 if we introduce some of the sustainable practices already available to us. I recently saw Damon speak and was intrinsically motivated and inspired by his work and hope for our future. One of the quotes he left us with was, "the greatest threat to the planet is the belief that someone else will save it". I encourage you to take ownership of our beautiful planet and make your difference. The 2040 website is fantastic and has lesson plans and suggestions for how you can make a
difference. The movie night was a fundraiser for Farmers Across Boarders and we were really lucky to have Lavinia Wehr tell us about her experience with the organisation and the positive impact that it is making for drought-stricken farmers. Thank you to Chartwells who donated the food for the event. Close the Gap DayI am really looking forward to Close The Gap Day tomorrow. The Reconciliation Captains, Sophia and Abbey, will be running a quiz with some of the Prefects about Indigenous Culture. I certainly hope I don't lose...the punishment is cream on the face!! A huge thank you to everyone who got involved in the events this week. I look forward to seeing how YOU make YOUR difference! - Bella Poll, Service Captain

Making a Difference‘What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.’ - Nelson Mandela
What would our legacy be: a good parent or partner, loving child, wise counsellor, custodian of the environment? Perhaps the last option sits uncomfortably with many. The EnvironmentCivilisation seems intent on consuming the earths limited resources at an alarming rate – a rate that is unsustainable. Many believe that this impacts global warming, with the resulting droughts, rising ocean levels, and increasing bush fires, hurricanes and tornadoes. In addition to this, we find nature polluted by plastic and toxins and earth’s limited resources stretched by over population. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel? While we spend much time and energy in consolidating our relationships with our loved ones, perhaps we should invest more energy into securing the environment for the next generations. If the current population inhabiting earth were determined to make a difference, we might not have an immediate effect in reversing the environmental devastation, but even small intentional changes by multiple
individuals will prove powerful. PLC Girls Making a DifferencePLC's environmental themed 'Make a Difference Week' has proven that our young people are passionate about making a change and are looking for ways to improve. We are making a difference! - Rev Manie Strydom, Chaplain

Important Information - COVID-19As the Coronavirus COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, girls are being asked to wash their hands frequently, not to touch their faces, and to cough into their elbows or into a tissue (before disposing of it). Shaking hands and other physical contact is being discouraged. Our major initiative at school focuses all staff and students on good hand hygiene and we recommend you do the same at home. If your daughter shows any
sudden cold or flu symptoms, please keep her at home and contact your GP. Information about coronavirus changes by the day and we are keeping abreast of advice from the Department of Health, WA Department of Health, the World Health Organisation, and where required, our School Nurse, Ms Alana Coffey. We are heeding their warnings and doing all they recommend. Thank you to all of our families for your ongoing co-operation and measured response to this matter. We will continue to keep you updated as more information comes to light. Inter-House Swimming Carnival ResultsPlease click here for the Inter-House Swimming Carnival Results.

Year 11 DanceLast Friday's Year 11 'Starry Night' themed Dinner Dance was certainly a night to remember! Thanks to the fabulous parent helpers, the Claremont Yacht Club was transformed into a real ‘Starry Night’ that the girls will remember forever. The girls looked so beautiful and behaved impeccably throughout the evening. I think it says a lot about how fantastic the Class of 2021 will be as the leaders of the
School next year.
PROMS Concert & Gorna Liyarn PerformanceI was most impressed with the talented Music students who performed at the Proms Quarry Concert last Sunday, as well as the Gorna Liyarn girls' performance at Wesley College the same night. The hard work and dedication from these girls is admirable. Well done! Good Luck To Our SwimmersI would like to wish all the members of our Swimming Team and student helpers, the best of luck for tomorrow night's IGSSA Swim Carnival. There was certainly a buzz in the cafeteria this morning as the swimmer’s received a special gift...PLC slides! I look forward to cheering them all on tomorrow night.
