The group chose School 21 specifically to learn about our innovative practices including coaching, project based learning and oracy. The students stepped up wonderfully and represented School 21 with professionalism and pride. The Korean teachers even ran 2 workshops for some of the Year 5 and Year 8 students, teaching us all about traditions and culture in Korea. A big thank you to all the students for being so welcoming, and also to the staff who gave up their time to run workshops and opened their classrooms to share their practice. It was a true example of our #middlestrong spirit! Year 7 Ignite: A moment of humanity Letters will come home this week about the Year 7 Ignite performances for this year. On Thursday 4th July, in the Middle School Courtyard and surrounding rooms, all Year 7 students will perform their own original speeches they are crafting over this half term. The Ignite process gives the newest students to our school a course in Oracy and provides an opportunity for personal reflection. The speeches this year are focused on a moment of humanity that each student has experiences and identified and the impact this has had on themselves and the community. We look forward to seeing all Year 7 parents there! Please note, students are expected to stay back after school on this day to rehearse and get ready. Please contact Mr Thomas with any questions or concerns on dthomas@school21.org.uk Raising money for Cancer Research Hi, I'm Zain in Year 5 and I am holding a bake sale on Tuesday 18th June to raise money for this incredible charity with the help of Helen; Luke's (year 6) and Eve's (reception) mum. If you are working on a community project or would like to celebrate an achievement from outside of school in our newsletter, please get in touch with Ms Kyrk to help organise this. Breaking News in Year 7 Each week the Year 7 Newsroom project reports on various goings-on around the school and other, wider events. With the support of Ms Druce, they research, conduct interviews, write, film and edit their broadcast. This is then shared with the Middle School to watch with our coaching groups. Each week the project group reflects on what they have produced, offering each other critique and feedback in order to improve. This has lead to the group getting better and better each week! See below for the latest installment of the Middle School Newsroom! Bouncers and Shakers Play We are very excited to invite you to a public performance of the plays Bouncers and Shakers performed by a cast of Year 7 and 8 students. These students have been working hard to update and modernise these two plays by John Godber, bringing you performances that will make you laugh whilst challenging modern ideas of entertainment, alcohol and stereotypical gender roles. Bouncers It’s Friday night, it’s party time - time for Bouncers to come alive! In this outrageous and hilarious parody of contemporary night-life, four brutish bouncers introduce us to a host of lively characters all set against the tatty, glitzy glamour, flashing lights and pulsating beat of the dance floor. Shakers Every town has its ‘Shakers’, the oh-so trendy cocktail bar where everyone wants to be seen. We are given a wickedly funny glimpse of this world by the four long-suffering waiters, offering a fascinating view of the reality that lurks behind the plastic palms of Pina Coladas. Details Doors open at 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start and 8:00pm finish. There will also be a short interval in between the two plays. Tickets are available on ParentPay at the price of £3 each (£2 concession). Both plays are suitable for children aged 11+. For any questions email Dan Thompson on dthompson@school21.org.uk or Kourtney Hansen on khansen@school21.org.uk.
Summer Fair Update Coming up on Friday 5th July is our Annual Summer Fair, organised collaboratively with Primary. We would really love to have as many parents involved as possible in preparing, running and tidying up after the event. If you would like to be involved (even if it is just to donate an hour or two of your time!), please email Ms Kyrk (akyrk@school21.org.uk). We will need help throughout the event which will run from 3:30pm to 6:00pm, and also in the weeks leading up to the event. Some of our wonderful parental community have already kicked off booking rides and stalls, so please get in touch if you would like to join them! Some of the areas we would love some help with are: - Planning the event There is an opportunity as well to run your own stall during the event for a one off stall fee. Please get in touch with Ms Kyrk for further information. Please note that while all students are welcome to attend the Summer Fair, parents or carers must attend with them, even in Years 7 and 8. Recognition last week Our recognition boards were filled with names again last week. Congratulations and thank you to all who demonstrated working in the zone, choosing kind and stepping up - you make our Middle School community #middlestrong!
