Throwback ThursdayMarking 75 years since the end of WWII, we acknowledge the war service of those from the Strathfield area, including Lance Bombardier Francis Fitzmaurice (NX38456) of the 2/1 Heavy Battery. A member of Sparrow Force – sent to defend Timor – he was taken prisoner in Java during April 1942. On 9 August 1945 he was one of just 24 Australian POWs in Nagasaki, Japan when the atomic bomb was dropped. This photo shows Francis Fitzmaurice (middle row, 3rd from right) and other Nagasaki POWs returning to Australia aboard HMS Formidable in October 1945. Francis died, aged 87 in 2006.
