NGĀ KAUPAPA NUI | 2017 Te Rangi Hiroa Medal WinnersMedal recipient Professor Murray Cox with our Chairman Jamie Tuuta and Miriama Evans at the award ceremonyOne of our two medal recipients of the Royal Society's Te Rangi Hiroa Medal is Professor Murray Cox, of Massey University. Murray was awarded the Te Rangi Hiroa Medal for his anthropological work to reconstruct processes of transformation and change in past societies using genetic data. His research has revealed a number of social features from the past such as marriage rules and farming expansion in Southeast Asia!
Murray is also keen to share his journey with uri who may be interested in the mahi that he does. "If there is ever any interest to meet, I would be delighted to kōrero about my work. And thank you to Ngāti Mutunga too. Tēnā rawa ate koutou!"Our other medal recipient is Professor Tracey McIntosh, of the University of Auckland. Tracey was awarded the Te Rangi Hiroa Medal for advancing our understanding of enduring social injustices that undermine Māori wellbeing.
Always great to see such amazing talent coming from within our iwi. Ka mau te wehi!!Professor Tracey McIntosh with her medalTARANAKI TU MAI| 2017 ManaiaLabour weekend saw iwi from across Taranaki come together for Taranaki Tū Mai 2017. It was a record turnout with over 2000 people taking part, doubling the numbers from the previous event in 2015. Ngati Mutunga had strong representation across the events with teams placing first in both Touch and Ki-o-rahi, Second in Netball (ladies and mixed), basketball, and bowls and third in Rugby League 9’s. As always the kapa haka competition was hearty. A particular highlight was the hand-made taniko kākahu made from members and supporting whanau of our kapa haka rōpū Te Uru o Te Rangi. The feedback from whānau about the event was fantastic, with many enjoying themselves and appreciating the opportunity to get to know whanaunga from other iwi as well as taking part in the team sports. The Ngati Mutunga ‘home base’ marquee at the Manaia Sports Complex was a hive of activity during the event where whānau would come and go or head off to their respective sporting event, and then return to relax and re-energise before heading off to the next game or activity. The final activity, Tautohetohe, provided excellent entertainment and was a good way to wrap up the events for the weekend. And well done to Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri who placed first in the League 9’s! Finally we would like to extend a huge mihi to Ngāruahine for doing a really great job hosting and coordinating the event. We’re looking forward to Taranaki Tū Mai 2019 which is to be hosted by Ngāti Maru. KAITIAKITANGA | Freshwater Training Wānanga Update The Taranaki Regional Council Freshwater Training Wānanga held early last month in Stratford was a great success and it was awesome to say many Ngāti Mutunga uri attend. The Wānanga ran over two days where participants learnt about how to keep our waterways clean and healthy. Keep an eye out for more opportunities to get involved or feel free to contact Marlene on 022 900 762 or Larry at the iwi office 06 752 3247 for any more information.
