Top 100 Golf Courses "BiteSize" - April 2015

The Masters may be a dim and distant memory for most of us but we’re sure Jordan Speith will forever remember his triumph at Augusta National earlier this month. This week the PGA Tour is in San Francisco for the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Match Play at the re-branded TPC Harding Park. A field of 64 will battle it out on the short (by today’s standards) but classic Watson and Whiting-designed course. The design duo may not be naturally associated with the Golden Age of golf course architecture, but their Lake course at the nearby Olympic Club is testament to their ability.

Top 100 Golf Courses of Canada 2015

Since we first established a ranking chart for Canada in 2006, the distinguished old layout at St George’s Golf & Country Club in Toronto has been recognised as the undisputed Canadian number one. St George’s retains its position at the top of our latest listings, but only just. Rising all of nine places to the number 2 position, Rod Whitman’s Cabot Links is now vying very strongly for the coveted top spot.

The North and West Coast Links of Ireland

Following a recent trip to the Emerald Isle our Editor and Scottish Correspondent was blown away by the golf and craic stating that: “Ireland really outperforms any of its golfing competitors because it has the natural ability to combine golf with hospitality in a totally effortless manner. The weather might not always be the very best but for many golfers who’ve been around a bit, there’s still no finer place to play the game.”

Top 10 Golf Courses in Dunbartonshire 2015

Dunbartonshire is in the fortunate position of having two courses, Loch Lomond and The Carrick, ranked within our national Top 100 chart for Scotland. Indeed, the private Loch Lomond layout is one of only a dozen or so Scottish courses listed in our World Top 100 rankings. Unsurprisingly, these two courses, both of which were designed by North American architects (Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish at Loch Lomond and Doug Carrick at The Carrick), remain at positions 1 and 2 in the Dunbartonshire chart, head and shoulders above all the other contenders.

Top 10 Golf Courses in Durham 2015

Seaton Carew is the only course that remains in the same position within our 2015 Durham Top 10. Marc Westenborg of Hawtree Limted designed the bold and modern Rockliffe Hall in 2006 and it moves up to 2nd place, dislodging the old parkland layout at Brancepeth Castle, which once contested for an English Top 100 position. We wonder if the course that Harry Colt routed across the old Brancepeth Castle deer park will be a future Top 100 contender?

Top 10 Golf Courses in Northumberland 2015

On the North Sea coast sits the premier course in Northumberland, Berwick-upon-Tweed Golf Club. Goswick Links, as it is commonly known, has featured in our English Top 100 since 2006 when we became the first publication to rank England’s golf courses. However, there’s a new Northumberland upstart that’s hot on Goswick’s heels. Scott Macpherson spent eighteen months researching designs by architect Harry Colt prior to fashioning Close House’s Colt course, which doffs the hat to the Golden Age of golf course architecture.
