It has been a very busy three months since our last newsletter and it has been a delight to welcome many of you to the various events held during this period.  It is because of you and your generous donations that we are able to run these events, such as our “Be Inspired” series at no cost to the general public.  Judging from the popularity of these events, with two of them being sold out and the other extremely well attended, your investment with us has certainly reaped rewards in raising awareness of the Foundation and the services we offer.

Freycinet for the classroom

Freycinet.org.au

Thanks to a grant from Lotterywest, we were able to develop the great website based on our Freycinet Collection:

www.freycinet.org.au

To complement this, we are thrilled to announce the launch of a comprehensive Teacher Resource Package to accompany the online exhibition. The Teacher Package contains a wealth of cross curricular activities and thought provoking questions. Based on Years 4 and 9, the package enables students to explore the Freycinet story and add to their knowledge of early French exploration and the French culture. Even if you are not a teacher you or your family would find the content of interest.

hiLIGHTS of 125 years!

State Library WA 125th Logo

Throughout 2014 we have brought you a wide range of events and functions to attend that have celebrated the library, its people and its services in a number of different and exciting ways. The culmination of this significant anniversary will be held on 6 December when the State Library will host ‘hiLIGHTS’. This free event features a night of family friendly activities including large scale film projections onto the building which showcase the State Library’s journey from its inception to becoming the vital and popular cultural institution that it is today. The building will be lit up accompanied by music.

Be Inspired @ the State Library

“The interactivity with audience. Wonderful musician talks and ability to connect Library archives with a broader audience” - audience quote

Our free “Be Inspired” events were designed to complement the very popular “Memory House” exhibition which was recently on the ground floor of the building. To date the topics have included Food, Music, Perth Stories and Emerging Writers. Some of these topics have been recorded and uploaded to the Audio & Video page on the library's website.

October’s talk featured Emerging New Writers: Premier's Book Awards shortlisted authors in the 'Western Australian Emerging Writers' category, Yvette Walker and Dawn Barker. This talk was hosted by well-known writer and writingWA board member, Amanda Curtin.

Coming up on 25 November, our “Be Inspired” series will enlighten you about the creative process involved in developing the innovate game "Escape Rooms". And in December our public talk series will end on a high note as we explore the Future of History. Keep checking your emails and the State Library and Foundation websites to find out more about the November and December “Be Inspired” talks.

August: Be Inspired by Music. Speakers Cathie Travers
and Dr Georg Corall

September: Be Inspired by Perth Stories. Speakers Warren Duffy, Richard Offen, David Whish-Wilson

Coming Up

As 2014 slowly edges its way out, the 125th Celebrations will continue apace. There are a number of exciting and original events planned that will demonstrate the State Library’s broad reach and range of services available to the public, whilst also celebrating its long history of giving to the State and its citizens.

Festival of Ideas: Disrupted!

http://www.disruptedfestivalofideas.com.au/

Disrupted: the library’s inaugural Festival of Ideas has a great line-up of speakers and events that will confront and challenge current and future thinking.

For the weekend of 31 October to 2 November, the library’s ground floor will be transformed into an interactive space with exhibitions and displays, a performance stage, places to gather and carry on the conversations including a pop-up bar. Talks and panel discussions will take place in the Theatre and on the performance stage. Some events will be live-streamed , allowing a geographically dispersed audience to participate.

The programme will be underscored by three central themes and the space(s) in which they intersect: Freedom, Information and Space. The Festival will be host to events of exceptional calibre bringing together entrepreneurs, innovators, thinkers and people with creative capacity across all fields of human endeavour. To find out more, please check out the “Disrupted” page on the State Library website: disruptedfestivalofideas.com.au

Cine-Concert "Verdun: Visions of History

Book now!

The Foundation’s collaboration with Alliance Francaise continues with an exclusive viewing of the silent film “Verdun, visions d’histoire“ by Léon Poirier. Verdun was the location of a significant battle during World War I and this film reflects its reality. Poirier’s adventurous project faced some considerable difficulties with very little footage of the actual battle remaining.  He solved this dilemma by interspersing the available footage with re-enactments and using fictional characters. As it was produced in 1926/1927 he was able to use some WWI veterans to play themselves.

“Verdun, visions d’histoire“will be shown on November 30 in the State Library Theatre and as is common for films of the kind will be accompanied by a live pianist. Watch the State Library Foundation website for details for booking for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Live piano accompaniment by acclaimed international composer and pianist Hakim Bentchouala-Golobitch. $45 General Admission, $35 for State Library members. Ticket sales 9386 7921 and at www.afperth.com.au
