No Images? Click here Join The FriendShip for these Great Upcoming Activities! Dear Friends, September is here, and The FriendShip is planning a lot of great activities! We’re hosting a special talk on changes in Medicare, an afternoon tea, painting classes, and more. We also have some neat new opportunities that are in the planning stages and would love to know if you are interested in helping out and/or participating. For all of the activities below, we are happy to arrange rides for members, as needed! To RSVP for any of these, just call the office at 803-602-6434 or email contact@thefriendship.org. Reminder: Quarterly Volunteer Get-Together This is just a reminder that the next quarterly Volunteer Get-Together is scheduled for Sunday, September 15 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. The special discussion topic will be tips for assisting members with visual impairments. If you haven't already done so, please RSVP by noon on Monday, September 9. If you would like to help by bringing food or drinks, just let us know, and we will get back to you about what's needed. Financial Preparedness for Independent Seniors: How to Choose the Right Medicare Supplement Join members and volunteers of The FriendShip on Thursday, September 19 to learn from the experts at Longleaf Advisors about changes to Medicare and how to choose the right supplement. We’ll hear about Medicare Advantage plans and review new and ever-changing rules about Social Security. Will Amick and his team of professionals will entertain questions about financial preparedness for seniors after retirement. This program will take place at 2:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Heyward Hall, Lower Level. RSVPs are not required but would be appreciated by Tuesday, September 17 at noon. Guests are welcome! September Social Hour: An Old English Tea For this month’s social hour, one of our members/volunteers will be hosting a formal, sit-down tea. We will meet at her home in Rosewood on September 24 at 2:00 p.m. Please note that space is limited so RSVP by September 17 at noon. (If there’s enough interest and we need to open up a second afternoon/timeslot for tea, we can do that.) Have You Always Wanted to Learn to Paint?! Sidney Wait, our wonderful and talented volunteer/member/Board member, has offered to teach a series of four painting classes for The FriendShip. The classes will be geared for people who have no experience at all with painting and all materials will be provided. The group will start by learning to mix colors and by the end of the series will have a still life completed! At this time, we are planning to hold four classes on Monday mornings from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in late September and October, but that is somewhat flexible depending on how many people express interest and what their availability is. The classes will meet in Sidney’s home in the Rosewood neighborhood. We will fill the classes on a first-come, first-served basis, giving priority to members. (Volunteers, if you are interested, please do let the office know!) Opportunity for Full Members (Volunteers needed to help too!) Do you have an outdoor task in your yard or shed that you’ve been wanting to get taken care of?! Here’s a great opportunity to check it off your list… The Servant Ministry of St. John’s Episcopal Church holds an annual Day of Service during which their volunteers work on community projects around town, and they have offered to complete projects for members of The FriendShip as a part of this day. If you could use one-time assistance on a yard project (or even help with a small outdoor painting task or clean-up task in a shed), please contact The FriendShip office as soon as possible to discuss this opportunity. Also, if you are a volunteer who might be interested in assisting the Day of Service volunteers, please let us know; we plan to have a FriendShip volunteer on-site with each member to be a liaison. The Day of Service this year will be October 5; the time of day for the projects is flexible. Party Planning Fun! In October, The FriendShip will be celebrating our 4th anniversary. If you are interested in helping to put together a birthday celebration, please volunteer by emailing contact@thefriendship.org or calling 803-602-6434. We are going to have a lot of fun planning this and all creative ideas are welcome! We are envisioning a fun, low-key gathering for members and volunteers—and would love help with any or all of the planning, food, etc. Get Moving with The FriendShip! The FriendShip is working on the idea of starting a weekly walking group. We are still in the initial planning stages. At this point, the idea is to have people meet once a week to walk together at the gym at Eastminster Presbyterian Church (which has a cushioned floor). We will be sure to have walking groups moving at different paces so that people can walk as slow or as fast as they feel comfortable. We will choose the exact time/day based on the availability of those interested but expect to meet either mid-afternoons on Mondays, mid-afternoons on Wednesdays, or Friday mornings. If you haven’t already done so, please let us know if you are interested so we can follow up for your input as this idea takes shape. A Look Ahead at October Offerings
