When: Saturday 26 May, 2pm Throwback ThursdayTrooper Ernest James (Snowy) CraggsTrooper Ernest (Snowy) Craggs of Enfield was just 19 when he rode into the famous Battle of Beersheba on 31 October 1917 with the 12th Light Horse Regiment. With bayonets at the ready they galloped across the open countryside, desperate to secure the water wells at Beersheba, Palestine. Sadly, Snowy was killed that day. Lieutenant Edward Ralston of Strathfield wrote to his parents to say that he ‘was full of spirit all through the long night ride. He rode into action just behind me and the last I saw of him, he was standing in his stirrups and cheering.’ Courtesy Australian War Memorial Visit the Strathfield Library exhibition Strathfield Answers The Call: 1914-1918 until 21 June 2021. |
