A Shining Example of Support

One of the (many!) things we love about Tasmania is the support in the community for all things art. We have a behind the scenes story of this support that we want to share with you!

We have what will be a truly shining artwork in Burnie by the industriously creative Ritchie Ares Doña that involves transforming (with the help of hundreds of willing hands) the unwanted into the stunningly lustrous!

Making Ritchie’s installation become a reality requires A LOT of unwanted materials — in this case the shiny, foil wrappers from food packets. Think that packet of chips you devoured on the weekend, or in this case the packets that café coffee beans come in.

Thanks to McDonald’s in South Launceston, Ritchie now has more than enough silvery refuse to complete his installation (and saved it from ending up in landfill)! Hundreds of empty coffee bean packets will be transformed to reveal their silver linings.

The wonderful assistance of Megan and the team at McDonald's South Launceston is a shining example of community support that help make Ten Days on the Island so special.

Come and see Ritchie's The Silver Lining in the Atrium of the Burnie City Coucil building from Fri 17 March 2017.

Calling All Volunteers

Ten Days on the Island is back, and we have a great festival in the works for 2017, with shows across Tasmania, from Port Arthur to Flinders Island. Ancient Chinese fairy tales, contemplative rock balancing in national parks, works of monumental art blending into the landscape, or a brooding one-man musical bringing The Bacchae to life — Festival 2017 reaches far and wide!

So, it’s time to get involved! There will be volunteering opportunities across the state, ranging from usher to runner; from flyer distributor to renovator. There’s something for everyone, with the chance to work in wild locations with amazing artists. So, whether you’re a people-person or a jack-of-all-trades, we would love to hear from you.

The Festival officially runs from 17 to 26 March, but there is heaps to do outside of those dates. So, if you’re interested, let us know when you are available between 15 February 2017 and 31 March 2017, and whereabouts in the state you're best placed to volunteer. After that we’ll get back to you with some more details and suggestions on what type of role you might like.

So write us at info@tendays.org.au, or give us a call on 03 6210 5700 or sign up right now online here.

We hope to hear from you soon!

THINK ‘FESTIVAL’ THIS FESTIVE SEASON

FESTIVE (adjective): cheerful & exciting; of or relating to Christmas.

FESTIVAL (noun): a special time or event when people gather to celebrate something.

Whoever your Christmas shopping list includes, from hard-to-buy-for highbrows to your favourite fun-loving friends and everyone in between, make their day (and your Christmas shopping easier!) with a Ten Days on the Island gift certificate

Gift certificates can be used for tickets for all Ten Days on the Island 2017 events, so why not let your friends and family choose their own festival adventure? Whether it’s a wine-soaked evening with award-winning rocker Hawksley Workman, or a beautifully intimate photographic journey with Volker Gerling, an oh-so-cool chance to dance with Belle du Berry and Paris Combo or a fairy tale brought to gorgeously lush life by some of Shanghai’s best performers, the brutal harmonies of The Rite of Spring or the magically charming You and Me and the Space Between, Ten Days on the Island 2017 will satisfy the fussiest itch.

Gift certificates are available from the Box Office by calling 03 6210 5777, or online.

FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD TO YOU...

We only launched two weeks ago (Wow! Time really flies!) and we are so excited that Ten Days on the Island audiences really like what 2017 has in store!

With so many fantastic events to choose from it's really hard to know what to talk about first, but here's a few highlights from our extraordinary international program to start you off exploring the program ...

White Snake

Once upon a time, a young man fell in love with a beautiful woman. They married and lived happily until her true identity was revealed; she was a magical white snake.

The famous myth has captured imaginations for centuries. This telling turns the classic, ‘love-knows-no-bounds’ tale into a sumptuous visual experience of performance, music, art, song and costume.

The deft hand of Italian dramatist Giacomo Ravicchio places some of Shanghai’s best performers against a backdrop of projected live illustration and traditional imagery. This, along with a blend of Chinese and western music by composer Jeremy Bauer, punctuates and accents the Mandarin narration.

Staged with English subtitles, this is a wonderful introduction to Chinese theatre for all the family.

The God That Comes

In a world ruled by greed and an oppressive king, the lesser classes have taken to the countryside in a revolution of hedonism and spirituality. There, they commune with their animal needs to dance, to lose control, to get drunk and to have sex.

The God That Comes is a wine-soaked rock & roll cabaret starring Hawksley Workman in an extraordinary solo performance that fuses the chaotic revelry of a rock concert with the intimacy of theatre. Hawksley — award-winning rocker, writer and actor — plays all the characters and all the instruments in a spectacle of pure talent

It is a tonic for a society that has lost its sense of balance and abandoned its animal instincts.

Raise a glass, get lost in the music, but beware; this is Bacchus at his most potent.

Portraits in Motion

The earliest form of film – the flipbook – is revived by a travelling minstrel whose music is in his pictures.

Volker Gerling has walked 3,500km over 13 years and had thousands of human encounters in search of lost moments.
He has compiled these intimate moments into flipbooks and now presents the best of them to audiences all over the world.

Using his flipbooks, a projector and his elegant humour, he creates a narrated ‘thumb cinema’ that exposes what the rushing world doesn’t see.

A gentle meeting of cinema, photography and story.
