As we step into July, the end of the previous financial year is behind us and an incredibly busy time for many in our industry has passed. 30 June also presents an opportunity for us to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the past year and, of course, the priorities for the year ahead. Forward. Together. is not only the theme for our 2023 Conference but also our thinking and rationale behind the commitments made in our Strategic Plan 2022 - 2025: Building on Strength. Over the year ahead, our commitment to modernising the workers compensation laws is unwavering. We will maintain the momentum for improvement and the spirit of new legislation and regulations by taking further action to strengthen regulatory activity and dispute resolution services. Forward. Together. places strategic scheme management at the centre of our efforts, and we are focused on finding every opportunity to strive for service excellence. The new financial year provides the perfect platform for all in the scheme to move Forward. Together… and we have the perfect time and place to do so! Over 50% of our Conference tickets have already been sold, so don't miss out on your opportunity to progress Forward. Together FOCUSFocus on amendments to the premium appeals process What’s in it for you?During the last financial year, the WorkCover WA Board reviewed the approach to the loadings greater than 75% and appeal processes. In consultation with industry, the process has been refreshed to ensure it is contemporary, fit for purpose, and responsive to changing community expectations. This practical piece of work is intended to support insurers, brokers and employers in their practices. Learn more about the changes to this process in the updated Assessment of Premium Rates and Industry Classifications: (APRIC) Loadings and Appeals Policy. OTHER NEWSCompliance 101 What does an Inspector do?Inspectors have very specific powers under the Act. These powers are used to investigate potential breaches and recommend enforcement actions. Data sharing agreements between WorkCover WA and Commonwealth agencies assist inspectors in identifying and investigating potential breaches. Leveraging this data has exponentially increased beach identification and enhanced how inspectors carry out their duties. Prosecutions Commit fraud, we’ll find you.In a recent prosecution, the Magistrate found an entity obtained a fraudulent certificate of currency. The Magistrate noted this offence was akin to "sentencing for those accused of drug dealing". While the charge was for one offence within a period defined by a statute of limitations, the entity's history reveals it is not an isolated incident. Find out more about the penalty imposed in this case and about how you can cover your workers. It’s Cold Outside Avoid an uptick in winter claimsWe are currently in the middle of the Noongar season of Makuru, the time of year which sees an uptick in lost-time claims. While the leading cause (over 35%) of injury across the seasons is due to body stressing, we see an increase in Makuru. Unsurprisingly, falls, trips, and slips occur at this time of year, increasing sprains, strains, and fractures. Employers are reminded to think safety and check for risks associated with the colder temperatures.
