From the Principal ...What a busy week this week has been with the Character Dress-Up Day and Visiting Author on Tuesday, the strike on Wednesday, Grandparents' Afternoon yesterday and all week our Book Fair being open. Many thanks to all who have helped out through the week. At this stage the strike on Wednesday seems to have done little to change the mindset of the government. Whilst we would all like more pay in our pockets, there does need to be a major change to the pay and conditions for teachers. The country can't attract school leavers into teaching and one of the reasons for this is that they can get better money and conditions elsewhere. Until a change is made there will be a continual need to staff schools with overseas teachers who don't know the culture of New Zealand let alone the culture of New Zealand schools, and don't know our curriculum or the way in which we teach. In my view, this can only lead to a deterioration of our education system; something none of us should allow to happen. In 2007 the New Zealand curriculum was lauded as world leading and our system was the envy of the world. Whilst my hope is that there won't be a need for further industrial action, my gut feeling is that there will be. I trust we will still enjoy your support as a strong teaching profession means good learning outcomes for students. As you will read below, the frenetic pace of school life continues next week. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy time with your families over the long weekend and remain safe if travelling. Kevin Cross Country TrainingNext week we will start our cross-country training. At this stage it will just be within our school grounds. This is a reminder to please make sure your child has a change of clothes packed and a towel to help dry their feet and legs. Make sure these are in a separate bag and all clothing, towels, etc. are clearly named. If your child can not participate they must bring a note from home or a medical certificate as cross-country is part of our school curriculum. Character Dress-up DayOn Tuesday students dressed up as a character from a book. The whole school did a class by class parade on the stage in the hall with each student telling us who they were and the name of the book. It was great to see the enthusiasm and effort made from everyone including teachers and Mr Bush who was Winnie the Pooh. Below are some pictures from the parade. Visiting AuthorsThe visiting author illustrators this year were Lyn Kriegler and Kathy Walker. What a wonderful job they did of captivating the students and engaging them in what they did. The feed back was great and both students and teachers enjoyed the time spent with them. Grandparents' AfternoonGrandparent's afternoon is a day in our calendar that we all look forward to and we were very happy the sun was shining. It was great to see some familiar faces and also to see new ones. The children are always so happy and proud to have their grandparents here on the day. We thank the grandparents' for supporting the school by buying from the bookfair and we look forward to seeing you all again next year. A big thank you to the FoTHS for providing the afternoon tea for everyone. Matariki Lunch Pre-orderFor Friday 14 June 2019. Ag Day & Country Fair - Saturday 28th SeptemberThe FoTHS team are pleased to confirm the date of this year's renamed Ag Day & Country Fair. This is the biggest fundraising event of the year so we rely heavily on support from the school and local community to make it a success. Please save Saturday 28th September – it will be even bigger and better than last year! Animals this year will include lambs, goats and chickens – however calves will NOT be allowed under recommendation from Biosecurity NZ to help eliminate the spread of Mycoplasma bovis. In addition, we also plan to bring back some of the old fashioned activities and stalls to celebrate what makes us a uniquely rural school. If you would like to get involved with Ag Day, have a product or service that you chttp://tehihi.schooldocs.co.nz/index.htm?toc.htm?1893.htman donate, or just have some great ideas then please get in touch (Gina Beck 021 929 452).
