SLDL March News

The SLDL office hopes to engage students, faculty, and staff in ways
that promote and develop an inclusive and diverse environment.
We oversee student clubs and the Graduate Student Council, promote student engagement, host events and workshops related to diversity and leadership, advise international students, promote mentorship, and manage health insurance enrollment. Cesar Chavez Day  

Cesar Chavez Day is on March 31st and commemorates Cesar Chavez for his commitment to education, the environment, and civil rights. He worked to improve U.S. farm workers' working and living conditions. To celebrate, CGU will be off on March 26th.

2021 Kravis Concept Plan Competition  - Concept Plans due March 11th!

Each year, the Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University hosts the Kravis Concept Plan Competition, an opportunity for alumni and current students of the Claremont Colleges to pitch their business ideas to a panel of experienced judges with the chance of winning seed funding to further those ideas. Finalists in the virtual 2021 competition could win up to $9,500 in prize money.

APIDA Community Call 

Thursday, March 4th | 6 PM - 7 PM

Thank you to those able to join the 7C Ad-Board Community Call in support of APIDA students after an increase in recent anti-Asian/American incidents (see previous posts for context). This Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 6:00PM (Pacific Time), we invite Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi (APIDA) members from CGU and KGI to join us in a virtual community space to gather, process and engage with one another.

H1-B Q&A Session for International Students  

Tuesday, March 2nd | 11 AM - 12 PM

Students interested in more information on the nonimmigrant visa category of H1-B are invited to join this Q&A session provided by a southern California immigration law office. This is a good session for those who have questions about the H1-B process.

PFF Webinar- Assessing Student Learning: Alternatives to Letter Grading​  

Tuesday, March 2 | 12 PM - 1 PM
Facilitator: Noah Ringler, PFF Fellow

Our grades should accurately reflect the skills we are trying to build in the classroom. While traditional grading techniques can be effective, there are alternative ways to provide students with grades that may feel less punitive. In this webinar, I will go over several alternative grading strategies such as ungrading and gamification.

For International Students and Non-native Speakers of English: Turning a Perceived Disadvantage into an Advantage

Saturday, March 6th | 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM 

This interactive presentation promotes the practical application of Harvard Business Professor Laura Huang’s notion charted in her recent book Edge, Turning Adversity into Advantage to the career goals of international students and any other second language learner of English. Huang proposes that perceived disadvantages such as that of a foreign accent can be turned into a competitive edge for candidates seeking internships and career opportunities. Presented by SheriAnn Simpson, PhD director of the International Scholars Program, Kristen Brownell MA, MFA adjunct instructor, and Ricardo Orozco, an international student himself and an adjunct instructor in the International Scholars Program.

How to use the Library as a Graduate Student – Diving Deeper: Experimenting with Searching

Co-hosted by Kendra Macomber and Adam Rosenkranz, Librarians from The Claremont Colleges Library and FLOURISH in your First Year.

In this session, the first half will discuss more advanced searching techniques and review how to integrate Zotero citation management software into your research. The second half of the session will be a workshop to focus on your own research topics with librarian assistance.

Note: Please bring a research topic to work on during the session.

In the second installment, we will have Dr. Javier Rodríguez, Assistant Professor in the Division of Politics & Economics. His research incorporates theoretical and methodological principles from economics, demography, psychology, and public health to study the political causes and consequences of socioeconomic and racial disparities in health.

SLDL will host an Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshop, open to all current F-1 students, especially those who are planning to apply for pre/post completion OPT during the current or upcoming semester. During the session, we will cover information on what OPT is, and the application process including eligibility rules, timeline and required documents for submission

CircleUp–Decolonize your Syllabus

This is the second of a three-part series designed to help educators develop their awareness of and ability to respond to patterns of systemic racism and white supremacy across the educational landscape. It seeks to create more nurturing and inclusive classroom and school ecologies that actively work to disrupt and dismantle patterns of racism at the personal, interpersonal and systemic levels. Participants gain insight for recognizing how these patterns show up in classrooms and learn practical approaches, techniques and habits of mind for becoming anti-racist/anti-bias educators.

CWR Students of Color Writing Retreat 

Sunday, March 21 | 8:45 AM - 4 PM 

The Center for Writing and Rhetoric has recently started offering Students of Color Writing Retreats. With a Writing Consultant facilitating breaks and debriefs, this retreat will be a collaborative space for students of color to mutually support themselves in all stages of the writing process and gain invaluable feedback for their work.

Registration for this event opens two weeks prior to the event date and closes the Wednesday before the event. Information for joining the event via Zoom will be distributed to registrants on the Thursday prior to the event.

CWR Writing Effective Thesis Statements

  • Managing Stress Wednesdays 12-12:50 PM (weekly). This drop-in hour is for those who need to quarantine due to virus exposure, those worried about the health of self/others, and those who are feeling stress due to the pandemic in other ways.   • Yoga Postures for Stress Relief Wednesdays 3-3:50 PM (3/17 & 5/5). Join Drs. Dana Reyes and Beth Perlman for a workshop which explores postures, breathing, and stretches that help reduce stress.
