New Head of Senior School It is with great pleasure that I announce Ms Rebecca Watts has been appointed Head of Senior School from 2020.
Ms Watts is currently Head of Year 12 and Wellbeing Programme Co-ordinator at St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School in Karrinyup. Some members of our community may remember Rebecca from her time at PLC Perth as a Media Teacher and Senior School Co-ordinator from 2006 – 2011. She is a passionate advocate of girls’ education and believes single sex schools provide greater opportunities for young women to lead, challenge gender stereotypes, develop new skills and also offer a platform for girls to take calculated risks in a safe environment.
Ms Watts is currently studying an online Certificate in School Management and Leadership at Harvard Graduate School of Education and holds a Master of Education from Curtin University in which she focused on educational leadership, innovation and change in the workplace and examined female student leadership models. Ms Watts said she was thrilled to be returning to PLC, where she undertook her first teaching job and I am looking forward to welcoming her back to the School in this very important role.
Thank you, Mrs CrispI would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to Mrs Jenny Crisp for her outstanding work and commitment as Acting Head of Senior School for 2019. It is never easy to fill a senior leadership role in an acting capacity, however, Mrs Crisp has done so with great professionalism. I know I speak on behalf of all staff in thanking Mrs Crisp for her unfaltering stewardship. The appointment of Ms Watts now provides the School with the opportunity to make permanent appointments for other leadership roles in the Senior School, which have been filled in an acting capacity by some staff. This will
take place over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition into the 2020 school year. IGSSA Athletics CarnivalThis week’s IGSSA Athletics Carnival was a great success, with many outstanding performances from our girls. I’d like to give a special mention to Year 9 student, Annie Pfeiffer who broke a 38-year-old IGSSA record with her incredible 5.59m long jump. You did us proud, Annie! PLC finished fifth overall in what was a very close competition. The girls showed incredible determination and courage. I would also like to extend a special thanks to Head of Sport, Annette Pearce, and the Physical Education Department. As the host school, our staff put in an enormous effort to ensure the event ran smoothly.

Instruments of PeaceFrancis of Assisi was born in Italy in 1182 and, at age 20, devoted himself to a life of prayer. In 1205, he dedicated himself to God and embraced a life of poverty. In light of the International Day of Peace being celebrated on Saturday 21 September, a very famous prayer from Francis might remind us of helpful perspectives in life: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.- Rev Manie Strydom, Chaplain

Year 9 Summers Lunchtime Stall for Ecuador RainforestNext Tuesday 24 September, students in Year 9 Summers will work collaboratively to raise much needed funds for the Ecuador rainforest through Rainforest
Rescue. Rainforest Rescue has been protecting and restoring rainforests in Australia and around the world since 1998. The Cloud Forests of Ecuador contain 15-17% of the world's plant species and nearly 20% of its total bird diversity. Globally, Cloud Forests make up only 2.5% of the overall world's tropical forests, and 25% of the Cloud Forests occur in Ecuador. These forests are considered to be close to the top of the list of threatened ecosystems globally. Click here to view the poster. - Linda Malone, Head of Service and Community Partnerships
Class List CreationAs was posted on Seesaw earlier this week, we are changing the way classes are created for 2020. To ensure every girl has a friend in her class, we recently asked all students in Years 2 to 5 to identify five friends they would like to have in their class next year. While girls will not be placed with all of their friends, through the new class creation process, we will make sure your daughter is in the same class as at least one of her identified friends. I would like to reiterate that this can be a sensitive matter for both students and families, and ask that you please keep this information confidential, as we
will. Class teachers will create draft class lists, with the goal of having a balance of academic and social-emotional strengths and needs. The Deputy Head (Teaching and Learning), together with the Co-ordinator of the ELC, Co-ordinator of Gifted and Talented, Junior School Psychologist and Deputy Head (Pastoral Care), will work to finalise classes in time for Orientation Day, on Friday 22 November. Orientation Day – Kindergarten to Year 6 (2020)In previous years, the focus of Orientation Day has been to welcome new students to the school. While this remains an important part of the day, I believe Orientation Day should
be an opportunity for all students to glimpse 2020. Therefore, this year all students will spend the day in their 2020 classrooms, with their 2020 teacher and classmates. In my experience, this day has had a very positive effect on those who may be anxious about the upcoming year. More information about Orientation Day will be emailed home soon. Change of DatesDue to various external factors, a number of dates have changed. I would like to apologise for these late changes to the calendar. Please review the dates below that have moved for Term 4, 2019: - Year 3 OEP – 25 October to 26 October
- Year 4 OED – 27 November to 28 November
- Year 6 Exhibition – 30 October
- End of Year Assembly – 9 December
Mrs Jaques, Ms Perera and I are currently looking at 2020, with the intention of setting a calendar and making no future changes. - Richard Wright, Head of Junior School

IGSSA 2019It was a very successful day at the 2019 IGSSA Athletics Carnival on Tuesday, which PLC hosted. The weather was perfect and the day ran like clockwork, thanks to the dedicated Physical Education staff and the staff and student helpers spread across the events of the day. Events like this take detailed planning and a huge physical effort and the way the day unfolded was a tribute to the PLC Physical Education Department. The girls were motivated, well supported and gave their very best in every event across the day. Congratulations to each of our girls who competed. Year 9 Helpers This year we had requested that our Year 9 students take on board the role of helpers and they were enthusiastic and supportive of their fellow students as they competed. Events like this can sink or swim, based on the support of student helpers. School Events and Expectations Thank you to all the parents who support these events by standing firm when their daughter tells them that they would be better studying at home rather than attending the event. It is worth reiterating that this a school event and there is an expectation
that all our girls take on the roles they have been asked to perform to ensure the successful running of the event. As always, we ask our parents to stand with the school in echoing that events such as this one require all of the girls' efforts and support. There are a number of carnivals across the year, both IGSSA and school-based, and we thank parents for ensuing these events are given as much respect as any other school day. It is part of building our PLC Community and engaging all of our girls in the broad range of activities offered by the School. We see the work and the effort put in by the teachers to offer students engaging and worthwhile activities across all aspects of the school curriculum. As we approach the end of the
Year 10 exams this week, I would hope to see all our Year 10 girls fully engaged in the activities offered until the end of the day on Friday. Quests and Tours We wish all of the girls leaving on Quest activities or Tours fair weather, exciting adventures and the opportunity to make new friendships during their undertakings. We also wish the girls involved in exams over this week and the upcoming weeks every success with their preparation and performance.
