Middle School Newsletter

To our Middle School Community,

The first week of Spring Term 2 was a big one! Please see below for all of the stories from last week! Make sure you scroll all the way through to the end to ensure you don't miss anything!

Uniform
Please ensure your child is in full uniform each day including black shoes and a tie. PE kit must be the School 21 polo shirt, black tracksuits and black trainers. Students missing or with incorrect uniform will report to Ms McLear in the mornings to get a uniform slip. We will contact home to discuss how we can support students who are consistently not in correct uniform.

Lateness
We have started an improved 3 Minute Ready to Learn system to help students to be In the Zone and ready to go at the start of each lesson. We have talked in assembly how each 'few minutes' late add up and can leave big holes in our learning. Please support this message at home and help your child by ensuring they are well rested and arriving at school on time each day. Remember, there is our free breakfast club running so that students can come and eat from 7:45am!

Equipment
Finally, we reminded Year 7 and 8 to be ready to learn by Stepping Up and ensuring they have all of the necessary equipment for the day with them in their lessons. This includes pens, rulers and fully charged iPads.

First Aid Update

All First Aid Incidents will now be reported online using Medical Tracker. Parents will be notified by email automatically when a First Aid Incident occurs. Phone calls will continue to be made for more serious incidents. Please ensure that the School is notified immediately of any change of Personal Details.

Office Hours

Due to the confidential nature of information shared in the front office we ask that parents wait outside if you are collecting from clubs.  Parents should not be waiting in the Front Office reception area after 4:30pm without a staff member.

Your support on all of these standards is very much appreciated!

Parents' Evening Update

This week on Tuesday March 12th and Wednesday 13th the Middle School will hold Spring Term parents' evenings. There are slightly different systems depending on which year group/s your child/ren are in.

Year 5 - bookings can be made online as was the case last term. Follow this link to do so: https://thesource.school21.org.uk/Parents/Booking/Code?Length=7 You will be able to meet with your child's class teacher to discuss their progress. You will need the code supplied previously (and included on the new letters) to access the booking system.

Year 6 - bookings can be made on the slip being sent home this week. You will have the opportunity to meet with the teachers helping your child prepare for SATs, specifically in Reading / English and Maths. (Two appointment slots will be given).

Year 7/8 - you will have the opportunity to meet with the different subject teachers who teach your child throughout the week. The evenings will be held in the New Hall and will operate as a drop in system. Please look out for your child's teachers and drop in to see them when they are free. Please be aware, there may be some waiting needed when teachers are busy and we appreciate your understanding with this.

Please note, Year 5 and 6 parents are also warmly welcomed along to the New Hall to meet with the subject teachers for Drama, Music, Spanish, Art/DT and PE before or after your meetings with class teachers.

If you need any further support or clarification, please contact your child's coach.

Playground Equipment Plea

In the first week back we sent out about 30 new basketballs, footballs and soft playground balls out into our Middle School playground. Pictures of these are included below. Unfortunately, we only have about 6 of these left already! If a middle school playground ball turns up at home, please ensure your child brings it back into school. The equipment at play ensures that these free times are engaging for your child. Your support is greatly appreciated!

School 21 Celebrates World Book Day

Tuesday last week saw School 21 filled with Radical Role Model inspired costumes as we celebrated World Book Week. As part of the day, the Year 5 - 8 classes paired up with Reception - Year 3 classes in primary for a reading buddies session. All the students were a credit to their schools and loved reading along with their buddies! Lots of students and teachers were very excited to design projects like this were older students pair with younger after the event.... watch this space!

International Women's Day

On Friday last week it was International Women's Day! A group of girls from Years 6, 7 and 8 were invited to attend a session celebrating the event and exploring how we can recognise and empower women. The groups created works of art with drawing and collage. All students were a credit to School 21 and modeled professionalism, enthusiasm and spark throughout the event.

Lantern Walk - rescheduled!

Due to rainy weather on Friday, we've rescheduled the Lantern Walk to this Friday, 15th March. Keep your fingers crossed for dry weather! Bring torches, all things that glow, a water bottle and comfortable shoes to join us on the Year 6 / Year 8 Lantern Project group's walk for charity. Sponsorship money can be brought in any time this week! See you there.

Next Family Film Night

The next family film night is coming up on Friday, 22nd March - we will be screening Wonder Woman! International Womens' Day happens this month, so what better way to celebrate than to bring your family along to see this fab film full of strong female leads!  We ask for a £1 donation which includes snacks and squash. We hope to see lots of people there!

Year 6 Finds Drama very Lifting!

Year 6 are currently focusing on the play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, and have been working on lifts in their lessons. Their focus and collaboration this week was astounding and they achieved some amazing outcomes. Here are some of the Year 6 students learning to 'fly', supported by their classmates!

Energy Well Spent!

This week’s dance project has a special visitor! A professional dancer! The Year 8 students were enjoying dancing with her. Sophie Shaw from Sadlers Wells Theatre is very professional and we got to dance with her only for this week!

“I like the new dance teacher. She is very nice.”
-Maheen

First, there’s a warm up because it’s a physical activity. Second, they were creating their dance moves!

“When you’re on a stage, you have to exaggerate your moves for the audience to be entertained.”
-Sophie the professional dancer

I think Miss Jenkins and Miss Hansen provided a masterclass with Sophie Shaw so that the Year 8 students get to learn the moves of advanced stage dancing better. They loved this session!

Spring Term 2 Curriculum Overview Letters

#Middlestrong Book Detectives!

Congratulations to Aneesa, Year 5 and Jordan, Year 8, for guessing the correct book title in our 'Book In A Jar' library competition. The answer was George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl.

Thank you to all the students that took part.

Mrs Fisher

We are running a very successful club every morning from 7:45 to 8:25  (last entry 8:10).

I would like to remind everyone of the Breakfast Club Code of Conduct so that parents can share this with their children.

  • All pupils are expected to pack away resources and tidy the area.

  • No pupils to leave the club area without the permission of an adult.

  • Middle School pupils to stay in the club until 8:20. Pupils are not allowed into Middle School until this time.

  • Pupils should help each other and be supportive of each other.

  • Pupils will be warned about inappropriate behaviour twice then parents will be informed.

  • If the behaviour continues pupils will not be able to attend for a week.

  • If conduct does not improve they will not be allowed to attend the club for the rest of that half term.

  • Extreme behaviour will result in a ban.

The club is for everyone to enjoy themselves in a friendly and safe environment. Thank you for your support.

Book People Book Bus

A book bus will be visiting School21 on Friday, 15th March.

Students will be able to visit the bus during the day as classes and will have the opportunity to buy books. If you would like your child to buy a book then please send money in to school with them. Parents can visit the bus after school until 4.30.

This is a great opportunity to raise funds for our school library.

Look out for leaflets coming home soon.
