A Message from the Department Head

Dear Students,

I hope that you are managing during these trying times. Please know that each Management & Entrepreneurship faculty member is here to help. To this end, we created three videos which are conversations with several faculty members (links later in this communication):

· In a short video, Distinguished Professor Debbie Mackey, PhD, and I discuss internships – how to manage if you are in an internship now, why internships are important, and how to approach finding internships today. Debbie Mackey is the most connected person I know and has landed internships for hundreds if not thousands of Haslam students.

· This latter point about internships is picked up in a video with Dr. Jen Rittenhouse. Jen is actively consulting with firms on strategic HR issues given the radical changes taking place today. The video with Jen Rittenhouse discusses job strategies in the current market (10 minutes).

· Use this time to not only finish your courses but think about new opportunities. Associate Professor David Williams, PhD, and Dr. Shawn Carson created a video to discuss how times of disruption can be viewed as ones of opportunity for new or improved products, services, and processes can be seen more clearly. I think you will enjoy their conversation!

Saturday night, I had dinner with my daughter who is a junior in Arts & Science at UTK. We had a long talk about how disruptive and unsettling this time is and how it will be one of the most defining events (if not the event) in her life. Yet, as I shared with her, know that this time will pass, we will get through it with a mindset of flexibility and resiliency, and life will be normal again but perhaps a “new normal.” This is a time to enact the Volunteer Spirit: Reach out to make sure others are doing okay, while staying safe yourself.

Never hesitate to reach out to me or any professor. I look forward to celebrating with you in person once this time has passed.

Go Vols!

Our Name has Changed!

Our Name has Changed!

The Department of Management at the Haslam College of Business is now officially known as the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship. The name change, requested by the department, was approved by the UT Board of Trustees in February.

“We have a strong commitment to entrepreneurship research among our faculty,” says Anne Smith, head of the department, citing faculty members Melissa Cardon, David Gras, Tim Pollock and David Williams as prominent entrepreneurship scholars. Many other department faculty members have published or are actively engaged in research related to entrepreneurship.

The name change also is indicative of the fact that most of the department’s doctoral students are pursuing entrepreneurship topics. Several years ago, the department renamed the Strategy and Organizations doctoral program Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Organizations (SEO) to reflect this, which Smith says improves the students’ positioning in the job market for assistant professorship roles.

Internship Class Information

Internship Class Information

HRM/MGT 492 Interns: The classroom portion will continue via Zoom with presentation dates sent out soon. Thursday, March 26th at 5:00 pm, will be a Zoom session for questions about the hours or any assignment. Please work with your supervisor to complete the remaining portion of your 150 work hours virtually. For example: writing job descriptions, researching some information for your manager, working on a policy handbook, resources for FMLA, ADA, etc. or issues that deal with the virus and the handling of employees. SHRM is a great resource for this.

There are many free webinars that interns and employers can view and this could count as some of your hours. If you have not attended your professional meeting, a webinar can also count as your meeting.

Please review the intern guidelines and call or email me with any questions that you or your supervisor have, dmackey@utk.edu , 865-216-0511.
