A rare look at Kakadu National ParkEach year, NTGPE cultural educators take a group of GP registrars, medical students and stakeholders on a four-day Cultural Immersion Camp. This year participants went to the beautiful Kakadu National Park and had the rare opportunity to learn about the land, language and culture through the eyes of local Aboriginal teachers. Over the four days, they learnt how to catch and cook bush tucker, basket weave, make spears and find bush medicine. They also listened to family and ancestral stories around the camp fire, explored sacred sites and braved the notorious Cahills Crossing to visit the Injalak Hill ancient rock art galleries and art centre in Oenpelli. GP registrar, Dr Betty Lin described her experience as "four days of simple and basic life in a totally different corner of the world. I enjoyed my first kangaroo tail, the traditional Aboriginal way of cooking fish over hot coals and driving through a river crossing with crocodiles. It was exciting and memorable." The camps are now complete for 2018. Stay tuned for 2019 dates and locations.
