OSA's Tech Tip of the Month - Ribbon Fibre Splicer
This month, our tech tip concerns Sumitomo's new ribbon fibre splicer. Ribbon fibres are different to splice, and you'll need to take time to carefully plan how to use your Sumitomo Ribbon Fibre Splicer TYPE-72M12.
Sumitomo's Ribbon Fibre Splicer brings efficiency to the table. While single fibres are usually placed in a splice tray, a ribbon fusion splicer can fuse all 12 fibres at once.
Enjoying the benefits of the Sumitomo Ribbon Fibre Splicer requires more care, but you'll notice the time saving very quickly. To make sure your ribbon fits correctly in a splice tray, OSA shares our key tips to keep in mind.
Ribbons only bend in one direction and due to the size of the ribbon tray, they cannot overlap each other inside the splice tray. OSA recommends laying the ribbons into the tray before splicing.
Once everything is in place, remove the two ribbons that you want to splice together, cut them to the correct length, perform the splice, install the splice protector over the splice, and then place it back into the tray.
Remember, you will still need to splice the correct colour code just like
you would with a single fibre splicing.
