INTERVIEW WITH JEAN-NICOLAS CLOUE, PRESIDENT OF BP FRANCE AND OLIVIER CAMPENON, PRESIDENT OF THE CHAMBER
BP BREAKFAST CONFERENCE ON THE FUTURE FOR ENERGY 15 DECEMBER
On 19th December 2017, the Chamber had the pleasure of welcoming Peter Mather, Group Regional President, Europe and Head of Country, UK at BP, who spoke about BP’s thoughts on the future of energy.
Peter outlined the current situation in the oil and gas industry, remarking that the movement in oil price is not quite as globally significant as before.
Peter argued that in 100 years’ time there will still be enough oil and gas to supply our demand thanks to alternative energies, as well as increased efficiency and new sources of oil and gas.
We are at a “turning point in energy”. We thought the world would have taken more steps towards non-carbon sources by now, however the financial crisis made this a lower priority.Although not there yet, the shift to low-carbon is going to happen.
Low carbon or renewable energies are becoming more competitive and thus government subsidies are diminishing because of their demand. Peter explained that renewable energies have become real alternatives, with economic credibility, public approval and government backing, but that energy doesn’t change overnight. Therefore in BP’s Energy Outlook 2035, they predict that whilst hydrocarbons are becoming the slowest growing fuel, they will continue to be important, with gas as the fastest growing hydrocarbon. www.francobritishchamber.com

Should I Stay or Should I Go?
The 2014 Insurrection in Burkina Faso and the Pan-African Movement for Term-Limits
In 2014 President Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso sought to modify the constitution to allow himself to run for office one more time. He had ruled Burkina Faso for 27 years, since the infamous assassination of the legendary Thomas Sankara. Compaoré's move saw him deposed by a popular insurrection.
In this evening's discussion Asseghna Somda, youth organiser and constitutional lawyer, gives his insider's perspective on how these broader continental trends informed organising against President Compaoré's initiative.

No Borders?
The culmination of the Doing Interational Political Sociology workshop, this seminar promises to be a fascinating evening.
Join us for reflections and discussion on borders and their significance in our ever more globalised world. In an age of mobility are borders really relevant? Could we conceive of international relations without these traditional delineations? Would that be for the better?
Don't miss the debate.

Transforming Our Habits
Join Catherine Charrett (QMUL) and Erzsebet Strausz (Warwick) for the next seminar in our Dis-placing Politics event series.
We'll be questioning how institutionalised ways of knowing get in the way of being-together, of recognizing, seeing, listening to each other and facilitating (self-)transformation in politics, academia, and everyday life.
Dr Charrett and Prof Strausz's research and creative practice are guided by an ethos and desire to do something more than what is deemed already possible through the use of creativity, imagination and experimentation.
