The Internal Revenue Service should improve how it handles seized digital assets, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. The IRS in some cases didn't follow procedure for safeguarding the assets, the watchdog said in a new report.

Between September 2017 and October 2023, the IRS criminal investigations unit seized 299 digital assets worth a combined $8 billion.

Lawmakers in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday approved a plan to spend $23 million to modernize the city's tech and security after ransomware hackers a year ago disrupted citizen services and stole data. The city spent $7 million to hire cyber and legal experts to develop an incident report, which hasn't been made public.
