Upper Queen Street to Mercury Lane

Last Wednesday the new drainage design, accommodating the unexpected drainage connections previously found, was provided. Normal construction works in this area resumed on Thursday with the manhole installation on the Upper Queen Street end of the section.

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Installation of new drainage pipes - continuing from the new manhole by Upper Queen Street and heading towards Mercury Lane
  • The drainage upgrade will continue along the road across the pedestrian crossing
There will be some adjustments to the layout of the pedestrian crossing to ensure a crossing is available for the public.

This work is done in halves to enable vehicles to continue to exit Hereford Street.

Hereford Street to Howe Street

The construction of the raingarden and tree pit foundations and walls are complete and the landscaping fill is in place.  Last week the new footpath kerbline was laid and the first section of the footpath was poured.

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Night works to remove the existing footpath pavement towards the Howe Street corner on Tuesday 17 & Wednesday 18 November 2019.
These works are being undertaken at night to minimise the impact to the businesses.
  • Pouring the next sections of concrete footpath along the building edges towards Howe Street
  • An underground drainage upgrade on the corner of Hereford Street

Howe Street to Overbridge

Investigations works are underway in order for construction to recommence in this area.

Overbridge

Demolition works on the northern side of the overbridge is progressing very well with the all the bus shelters and the asphalt footpath removed.

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Removal of the asphalt on the carriageway
This involves a saw cut along the carriageway, before the asphalt is lifted off
  • Footpath paving starting on the bridge
  • Pedestrian access will be temporarily unavailable at times to ensure pedestrian safety
Some activities require pedestrian access on the bridge to be temporarily unavailable to ensure pedestrian safety, this is being minimised as much as possible.
  • Temporary Bus Service Relocation
The bus stops in this location have been relocated further along Karangahape Road, outside Blackboard Café.

Pilot holes

This week piloting starts on the section of works between Mercury Lane and the overbridge. This work is to investigate what is below ground ahead of the main construction works next year.

What to expect:

  • Each test pilothole will be approx 1m x 1m and is expected take approximately an hour to complete
  • The road will be sawcut, excavated and services documented before it is reinstated back to road as usual.

CHRISTMAS BREAK

Construction activities will continue as normal throughout the Christmas break, with our team observing statutory days.
