Click here October 4 2018 Large turnout at AIDA conference in PerthAustralian Indigenous Doctors' Association (AIDA), the national body representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors and medical students hosted their annual conference in Perth last week, September 26 -28. The conference had the largest number of delegates to date with 400 Indigenous doctors, medical students and representatives from supporting organisations travelling from around Australia to explore the 2018 theme 'Vision into Action'. Among the delegates were GP registrars, Dr Lorus Swift and Dr Sarah Goddard, and Flinders NT Medical Student, Jean Pepperill who all received NTGPE's support to attend. Menzies cultural orientation experienceMenzies School of Health Research operates a Youth Traineeship Program to support school leavers with an interest in health research and the corporate area. Last Thursday, September 27, NTGPE Cultural Educator, Elisabeth Heenan provided a special cultural orientation day for the eager Menzies trainees covering a range of topics including kinship, Indigenous history and living and working remote. Seeking medical educators for GPTQ studyGeneral Practice Training Queensland (GPTQ) are collaborating with University partners and several Regional Training Organisations (RTOs), including NTGPE on research projects recently awarded through the competitive 2018-19 Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Education Research Grants (ERGs). GPTQ's qualitative study, Medical Educators: Where do they come from?, aims to explore the barriers and enablers to the recruitment and retention of current, former and potential MEs in vocational general practice training. Focus groups and an online survey will be conducted to get an understanding of factors that influence the decisions to begin, continue, or leave a position as a GP working as a medical educator which will help inform future decisions and planning to manage workforce needs.
