Stakeholder news from Hotham Contents
Hotham is bursting with colour It's nearly summer, and Hotham is bursting with colour, like Davesia latifolia (above) which can now be seen all the way the Great Alpine Road. The summer website has information about bushwalks, so if you have guests who are up for a hike, they can check the summer website for weather conditions and tracks and trails information. John Murphy, author of ‘Plants of the High Country’, is visiting Harrietville this weekend to talk about the fascinating wildflowers of Mt Hotham, Mt Feathertop, Mt Loch, Mt Bogong, and the surrounding areas. The talk is this Sunday, 2 December, 7:30-8:30pm, in the Harrietville Community Hall. Free entry and no botanical knowledge required. Don't forget to send us your photos when you're out and about so we can share them on social media. You can email them to media@mthotham.com.au Summer infrastructure works There are a number of works currently underway, and when you visit the resort you may see some of this activity under way. The key projects at the moment are: 1. Removal of the Davenport Central Tunnel. This has been replaced with a graded roadway, which will be suitable for snowmobile access during winter. 2. Danny’s Shed extension. As per the eWaste article also in this issue of Community News, Danny’s Shed is being extended to enable the collection of eWaste at Mt Hotham. 3. Rising Water Main. After 46 years of service, the rising water main on Sun Run is being replaced. Stage One of replacement works has commenced. This is an upgrade of the pipeline, to meet the future water requirements of the resort. 4. Habitat protection project. Improved verge drainage along the Great Alpine Road between bus stop 8 and the workshop is currently in the design stage. This work will reduce sediments going into the catchment area and into the verge parking area. 5. Higgi Drive track improvements (photo above). The section of Higgi Drive between Anton Huette and the Arlberg has been capped to reduce drainage impact on the surrounding habitat and provide a surface suitable for walking and wheeled access (bikes, prams). Local vehicle will continue to have access between the Arlberg and Anton Huette, though there will be no vehicular access between Anton Huette and Aardvark. November snow brings back the winter wonderland The week of 19 October brought a surprisingly heavy snowfall to the mountain. This prompted some media interest for the resort, which is great. The website weather and roads widget on the home page of the website is still updated during summer, so please continue checking that in the first instance if you need information about conditions on the mountain. It covers a range of items we all use and discard from our daily working and home lives, including televisions, computers, mobile phones, kitchen appliances and white goods. Acknowledging the risks and opportunities associated with e-waste, the Victorian Government has committed to banning e-waste from landfill in Victoria, effective 1 July 2019. The e-waste ban will be designed to achieve a range of positive outcomes for the Victorian environment, community and industry. Currently, Victorians are able to recycle all phone, TV and computer e-waste items at dedicated collection centres throughout the state. To increase capability to include all e-waste (any item with batteries, a cord and plug) and to help make it as easy as possible to recycle e-waste, the Victorian Government recently announced it will invest $15 million in infrastructure. Currently Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board (MHARMB) has no facilities available for residents to drop off e-waste items. Over the 2018/19 summer, MHARMB will be constructing an extension to Danny's Shed for the collection of eWaste, jointly funded by MHARMB and Sustainability Victoria. We will provide more information about the progress of the construction then the process for recycling over coming months. To learn more about e-waste recycling and find details of your nearest recycling centre go to the link below. Bushfire-proof your place Summer is coming, and with it the risk of bushfire.
