First consultation round response

As you’re aware, the Kauri Dieback Programme recently asked you to have your say on the future management of kauri dieback disease. In the last update we said it was clear at hui/meetings held in Northland, Auckland and Thames there is great passion for kauri and people spoke from the heart.

Since the consultation closed on 16 July, we’ve been busy analysing over 500 oral contributions (from the hui/meetings), over 80 submissions received on the feedback form or through email and a handful of posted submissions.

We got our message out through a digital advertising and radio campaign, and public notices. We reached 64,300 people through Facebook and over 100 people or organisations through direct email. On top of this, programme partners also reached out to their networks. And around 150 people told us their ideas at the seven hui/meetings in Northland, Auckland and Thames.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to have your say.

What we heard – themes from the first consultation

We asked you to have your say, and you did. Amongst the ideas and feedback we received were questions. There’s quite a few of those and once we have collated all the answers we’ll make these available to everyone on our website.

On reviewing and analysing the feedback it was clear we could group it into themes. This doesn’t mean we have forgotten about individual ideas. These are very much informing the work we’re doing on the refreshed strategy and development of the National Pest Management Plan.

Read about what we heard during the first consultation on our website.

What’s happening now?

We’re drafting a refreshed strategy for managing kauri dieback disease using your ideas and feedback, and prioritising what can be done now to protect kauri. We’re also using these ideas to continue discussion about what should be in the National Pest Management Plan for kauri, and we’re setting out options for a management agency (the organisation) who will implement the plan.

Then ‘Let’s talk’.

There’s a bit of planning underway for the second round of consultation and meetings we’d like to see you at. At the meetings, we’ll tell you about the work we’re doing now and it will be a chance for you to tell us if we’re on the right track. This is coming up towards the end of August 2018.

Check out more about the second round of consultation on our website.
