Post-breach financial toll: South Korea's largest telecom provider said 2025's net profit dropped by 73% due mainly to customer defections and recovery and compensation costs after the breach of the personal data of all 25 million customers. SK Telecom disclosed the incident in April and later said it would spend one trillion won, or about $680.5 million, to improve its cybersecurity. (Business News This Week) 

  • The country's privacy watchdog fined SK Telecom about $91 million, a record for the agency. The company has sued to overturn the ruling. 

Infrastructure hacked in 37 countries in espionage campaigns linked to an Asian country, Palo Alto Networks said. The cyber company didn't name the nation but techniques echo those used by China. The widespread activity appears to be an effort to steal intelligence about rare earth minerals and trade deals, Palo Alto said.

Conpet, Romania's main oil pipeline operator said a cyberattack has disrupted internal business systems and its public website. Oil transport systems weren't affected, Conpet said. 

Get rid of old edge devices, U.S. warns. Federal agencies have 90 days to come up with a plan to phase out firewalls, networking equipment and other devices that are so old they are no longer supported by their makers. Agencies will have another nine months to decommission the devices, according to an order Thursday from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

  • The old tech makes agencies vulnerable to hackers hunting for gear that lacks modern security defenses, CISA said. 

Stopping deepfakes: The U.K. government plans to work with Microsoft and other cyber experts to build deepfake detection technology, British officials said Thursday. (Reuters)
