Tom Gipson - Actor (Christmas in Mistletoe)
JRM: How did you first react when you read this script? What about the story appealed to you most? Tom: What stood out to me the most about Brian and Vicki’s script was how meta it was. It’s a Christmas movie about characters trying to make a Christmas movie that has two other Christmas movies within it (the opening scene and the black and white movie referenced throughout). Add to the fact we filmed during that time of the year- it was almost surreal. Vicki also has a way with making the dialogue sound both grounded and real, something many films in this genre tend to lack. JRM: You’re co-starring alongside Kabby Borders in this film. What was your experience working with her and did you learn anything from your co-star? Tom: Kabby was a lot of fun to work with. She doesn’t take herself too seriously and really tries to enjoy life as much as possible by making the most of any and all opportunities. On one of our days off we went to the Biltmore Estate together and got to experience that beautiful property during the such a fun time of the year. If I recall correctly they had 64 Christmas trees inside of the mansion (don't fact check me on that lol) We sort of fell into our characters during the shoot. Me, the Christmas loving optimist with golden retriever energy and her, the snarky and slightly jaded black cat. I think It really lent itself to the chemistry on screen. I learned a few things from her but the most important thing I learned was who Charli XCX was. JRM: You’ve trained extensively and have a rich acting resume. What drew you to acting in the first place, and how has that motivation evolved over the years? Tom: What drew me to acting was my love of movies since I was a kid. I remember being 10 and my parents having separated. My dad would get me and my sisters every other weekend and we would go to the movies, that was our thing, we would just spend the day in theater. But even having that love of cinema I didn’t get into acting until later in my career. After college I worked in finance for nearly a decade on Wall Street for Merrill Lynch. After working in finance for several years I knew I wanted to make a change but wasn’t quite sure what that change was, until I asked myself if I could do anything without fear of failure, what would it be? Having that intimately honest conversation with myself, I knew It was being in the movies telling great stories as a leading man. So, I started taking some classes in NYC at Stella Adler and then a 2 year conservatory at William Esper and the rest is history. JRM: For aspiring actors who see your dual role as performer and coach: what advice would you give about choosing roles and preparing for them? Tom: Make specific and strong choices. So often when I'm coaching an actor for an audition they’ll come in with very surface level choices if any choices at all. Without strong and specific choices the tape will be at best natural but casual. But then after a bit of diving into what the script is really about and adopting a point of view from the character's perspective with some strong and bold choices that support the script, I’ll see a rich and connected performance that captivates. So yea, make strong choices young Padawans. JRM: Do you have a personal holiday tradition or memory that you feel resonates with the themes of this film? Tom: My little sister and I will watch Christmas movies together and my mom bakes these family tradition Christmas cookies every year…My sister and I will help put the icing on! JRM: What was it like shooting on location in Tryon then getting to experience the movie on the same screen used during filming at the Tryon International Film Festival? Tom: Tryon was so incredibly welcoming, in so many ways it felt just like the town of Mistletoe in the film. Getting to watch our movie in the same gorgeous Tryon theater that we filmed the beautiful climax scene at the end was again a hint of the surreal meta nature of the film and entire experience. Everything about it was magical and majestic. I’d like to give a special thank you to Mary and Kevin Parker of the GreenLife Inn where we not only stayed during filming but also filmed there as the Mistletoe Inn location! And I can’t forget their precious little doggy Violet who also made and appearance in the film! JRM: With the film being released in the holiday season, what’s your hope for how this film might be experienced by viewers (alone, with family, during a movie night)? Tom: My hope is that anyone, whether with family and loved ones or by themselves for the holidays, can watch this film and get some joy from it and possibly fill them with even just a little bit of that Christmas spirit. JRM: Favorite Christmas or holiday film of all time? Tom: Such a great question…I’d probably have to go with Home Alone (1 or 2 depending on whichever one I watched last lol) and a special runner up is Jim Henson’s The Christmas Toy which is a little hidden gem that as a kid absolutely mesmerized me. JRM: Were there any memorable moments on set or during scenes? Tom: A great experience I had on set was having a bit of freedom to improvise and bring some of my ideas to the table. In the scene where I knock on Willow’s door to make amends, having the Bah Humbug ticket and ripping it up was not in the script. Originally it was written that I knock on the door empty handed so I came up with that idea as a way to have a fun callback to that inside joke between us and as a way to insert a bit more heart to the scene to bring Willow and Zach closer together.
