Hi-Tech Precinct to host Latrobe Valley hackathon![]() The Latrobe Valley’s first GovHack event will take place on the future site of the Gippsland Hi-Tech Precinct over the weekend of 28-30 July. GovHack is an annual open data competition held across Australia and New Zealand which brings together technology creatives and innovators to explore ways to unlock the potential of data to solve a social, environmental or economic problem. Over a weekend hackers work in teams with an opportunity to create a project page, proof of concept or a video that tells the story of how government data can be used to come up with a solution to a real-life, local issue. A fitting host venue for the first Latrobe Valley hackathon is the Hi-Tech Precinct. The master plan is currently being finalised which will show a visual footprint of the site and how the Gippsland Tech School (currently under construction) will interact with the Precinct. Industry Capability Network working in the Valley![]() Local businesses are encouraged to create a profile on the Industry Capability Network (ICN) Gateway to showcase their strengths and capabilities to new customers, connect with other businesses and sub-contractors, and ensure they are notified of projects that require their specific business capabilities. ICN representative Colin Young, based at the LVA office, is working with local businesses and contractors to help them secure project work, including elements of the $2.3 billion High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT) project. The HCMT project will deliver 65 high capacity metro trains, a state-of-the-art depot at Pakenham East, and two train simulators to support the training of drivers. It will provide hundreds of jobs to build the high capacity metro trains and associated infrastructure, as well as ongoing employment opportunities over the next 30 years for maintenance of trains. The ICN Gateway publishes project opportunities from government, private project owners and local councils, including information regarding the HCMT project.
