Thank you for signing up to take part in New Zealand ShakeOut, our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi, taking place at 1.30pm on Thursday 17 October. It's important that we all know the right action to take in an earthquake and tsunami, so make sure you encourage others to get involved, practise their Drop, Cover and Hold and walk their tsunami evacuation route if they're in a coastal area. Visit www.shakeout.govt.nz for lots of resources to help you share ShakeOut and all the information you need to hold your drill and hīkoi. If you have any questions or queries, please email us at shakeout@dpmc.govt.nz Want to do more? Here are some ideas from people who took part in the previous drills:
Get your work ready If you’re a business owner, Resilient Organisations has a great guide called Shut Happens with simple steps that you can take to help your business ‘get thru’, which includes these tips for getting back together:
Just do it! Compile a list; make multiple copies in both electronic (mobile phone, USB stick or in the cloud) and paper format and diary a reminder to check that it is up to date periodically. Talk to your staff about what they, and their families, would require. Being able to contact each other is a key first step to beginning recovery from a major disaster. How much of those precious first few days following a disaster do you want to have to spend on such simple tasks when you could be getting on with the process of getting back into business. Why Drop, Cover and Hold?Drop, Cover and Hold is the right action to take in an earthquake. It stops you being knocked over, makes you a smaller target for falling and flying objects and protects your head, neck and vital organs. DROP down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but lets you move if you need to. COVER your head and neck (or your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you). If there is no shelter nearby cover your head and neck with your arms and hands. HOLD on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it. If there is no shelter near you crawl to an inside corner of the room and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. Many people are injured while trying to move DURING the shaking. It is safer to Drop, Cover, and Hold until the shaking is over. People with disabilities If you are unable to Drop, Cover and Hold
