The event was very well attended and benefited from the significant input of the European Commission to several sessions. During the event, the launch of the IIC Europe Chapter was announced, and you can read more on what that means below. We return to the USA in May, for our Telecoms, Media & Regulatory Forum in Miami, comprising a one day Regional Regulators’ Forum on 15 May, and a two-day Telecommunications & Media Forum on 16-17 May. Panels of senior experts will join the debate with delegates from Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond, and will explore whether policy makers in government, regulatory authorities and industry are doing enough to encourage investment and develop digital skills. We’ve all heard, and read, a great deal about the scourge of ‘fake news’ and the rise in online disinformation, but is it based on reality? The Annual Conference follows, where the rest of the TMT stakeholder community join regulators to continue the discussions around governance, content futures, competition policy, spectrum and privacy, safety, security. The Europe Chapter is an initiative of the three IIC Chapters based in Europe (Brussels, Italy and the UK) who will join forces and work together on one common theme of interest each year. This year’s theme is the European Electronic Communications Code. Registration is now open IIC UK Chapter EventLondon, UK Registration is now open for the next IIC UK Chapter event, ‘Investment in networks: what’s happening on the ground, and what can we do (or not do) to help?’ Kindly hosted by Ofcom, the aim of this discussion is to assess what is actually happening on the ground in terms of investment in advanced networks (fibre and 5G) both in the UK and elsewhere in the world. Learn more How susceptible are internet users?InterMedia Volume 46, Issue 4 In this piece, Professor William Dutton and Laleah Fernandez, Assistant Director of Michigan State’s Quello Center, examine the extent to which internet users are susceptible to fake news and disinformation. Their findings suggest that users’ vulnerability can be reduced by ‘nudging’ them towards good information practices, such as consulting multiple sources, making fact checking easier, and encouraging platforms to display their sources of information. In the first, The Criminal Code Amendment (Sharing of Abhorrent Violent Material) Bill 2019 has passed the Australian Parliament following the recent terrorist attack in New Zealand, despite criticism from industry. Learn more The Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA) and key stakeholders will undertake a project to explore practical technological solutions to address the proliferation of scams over Australian telecommunications networks. Learn more TRPC is a consulting firm run by Dr Peter Lovelock, an IIC Director and Chapter Head of IIC Singapore. This report contains a digest of legislation, news stories and updates from 14 countries in the Asia Pacific Region. In this month’s report, the impact analysis on the recent passage of the Australian Criminal Code Amendment notes that companies have responded by saying that the problem is highly complex, that the law is an example of a “pass it now, change it later” approach, and sets a bad precedent.
