Welcome

Now that the rush and hurly burly associated with the end of the financial year is over, we take time to enjoy the wonderful sunny days that winter brings to our fair state and ensure that coats and umbrellas are always close at hand.  Thank you to all of those who have contributed to the Foundation in the 2014/2015 financial year- your donations are always welcome.

We have exciting news for you:

Freycinet Suite Recital

We have another announcement to make regarding the significant Freycinet collection.

Our artist in residence, Dr Georg Corall’s wonderful original composition inspired by the Freycinet Collection will be revealed on August 30th at its debut performance at Government House Ballroom.    Dr Corall has enlisted the Perth Baroque Ensemble to produce this world premiere performance of the Freycinet Suite.

Tickets are on sale now with a limited number of premium package tickets available.  Please visit https://www.eventbrite.com.au/d/local/freycinet to make your booking.  The performance also includes a short talk about the collection.  The composer who was inspired by the Freycinet adventure to write this musical interpretation will discuss his experience and findings. The program will also include music by Haydn and Lully.

It's An Honour

It has been a busy time in the past few months with regard to awards.
Firstly we were so proud to receive a national award at the Museums Australia Conference in Sydney for the superb Freycinet Virtual Exhibition and Education Package.  This Museums and Galleries National Award was a great result for our talented team which included Andrew Bowman-Bright (curator), Shiona Herbert (education consultant), Professor Elizabeth Gralton (researcher and writer) and Professor Paul Gibbard (translator).  The judge’s comments were: “A stunning project making a small, fragile collection accessible to all. Good attention to historical detail.”

Kay Poustie Award

Secondly, we are thrilled to announce that Megan Sullivan, Youth Services Librarian at City of South Perth is the winner of the Kay Poustie Scholarship for 2015.  Megan plans to attend the 81st International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions Conference in Cape Town later this year.  The scholarship, now in its fourth year, has resulted in a strong body of research from each of its recipients that enables public libraries in Western Australia to learn about current international library practice, and apply the findings in local WA library settings to enhance the customer experience.

The program offers a broad spectrum of activities which should suit all keen family historians from the beginner through to more experienced researchers.

"On the Homefront" Appeal

Just a quick reminder about our On the Homefront appeal which aims to raise money to digitise a number of Western Australian newspapers and an assortment of documents such as letters and diaries from the World War I years and beyond.  These newspapers paint a colourful picture of life both on and off the battlefield and reveal such gems as this from The Westonian published on July 3rd, 1915:

“Bogholes: Should flitting lights be noticed on the road between Carrabin and Westonia, there is not cause to be alarmed.  They are not will-o-the-wisps, but the headlights of motor cars as they lurch and thrust in their efforts to negotiate the bogs.  The road is now regarded as the worst in WA and a striking testimonial to the Work Department.”

Bringing stories like these to life will help us to understand and appreciate the lives our ancestors
lived, their challenges and their joys, their hardships and their triumphs.  After all:

A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. Marcus Garvey
