Click here Dear Friend of PLC Learning Beyond the ClassroomThe start of Term 3 is always action-packed and provides a rich array of opportunities for students to be immersed in learning which extends beyond the four walls of a classroom. It is a time of year when the quad doubles as a dance floor; buskers inhabit the playground; common rooms are transformed to rehearsal studios; and the basketball court becomes a makeshift stargazing centre. The flexible way the learning spaces are used is a testimony to the resourceful approach our girls have to their learning. The variety of events and activities that populate Term 3 makes it an exciting time in the School calendar. Whilst the entire school year is full of activity, for some reason, this time of year always seems to have a little extra energy. Deep LearningWe all know that being hands-on and active in your own learning is one of the best ways to generate opportunities for meaningful deep learning. By working actively and productively in groups to create a product or to solve a problem empowers students to take ownership of their learning, which is a powerful strategy for achieving effective deep learning. These activities are an integral aspect of the girls’ learning journey as they negotiate with peers, set the bar high and, in doing so, develop independence by fostering:
As Ritchhart argues in Creating Cultures of Thinking, independence is such an important goal as students become internally motivated, reflective, resourceful and effective, striving to achieve their goals. A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed"A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out". It is difficult to explain to someone exactly what friendship is, but you’ll know when you’re in one. A true friend is someone who laughs with you, dreams with you, loves you and forgives you even when you mess up. When you feel down and out, a true friend could cheer you up and give you a different perspective – in her eyes you’ll be reminded who you are. Regularly friendships goes through times of trial. Lori Deschene’s words are helpful as she encourages us to be the person who breaks the cycle. “If you were judged, choose
understanding. If you were rejected, choose acceptance. If you were shamed, choose compassion. Be the person you needed when you were hurting, not the person who hurt you. Vow to be better than what broke you – to heal instead of becoming bitter so you can act from your heart, not your pain.” Friendships are important to us, so we invest ourselves, our time and effort into them. May we use the opportunities at PLC to forge lasting friendships; may each of us strive to expect the best of our friends and be quick to forgive and forget when the need arises. - Rev Manie Strydom Lighthouse NewsTo view the August edition of Lighthouse News, click here. Date: Tuesday 27 August Languages WeekIt has been a wonderful Languages Week in the Junior School. From a food extravaganza, to singing contests and an International Disco, the week has been a fitting celebration of languages in our School. Learning a second (or third or fourth) language is not only a valuable life skill, it also supports and enhances the learning of your mother tongue. There is a great deal of research that supports the benefits of learning additional languages and I have no doubt our Language B teachers would love to outline these in great detail! The finished books will be sent off to hospitals all over the country for sick children to read and enjoy. They will be eligible for state and nation-wide prizes in many categories including, 'Best Book' and 'Best Illustrations'. The girls will also be required to fundraise for their team, with all proceeds going to the Kids Cancer Project. We wish each of the girls and their teams every success in this competition. Uniform ReminderWe have recently had some enquiries about correct earings. The school uniform allows one earing in each lobe (either silver or gold sleepers; silver, gold or pearl studs). No earings with stones of any kind are allowed. This also means that any other piercings in the ear are not part of the school uniform and therefore not allowed. I would be very grateful if parents could assist their daughters to follow these uniform rules. - Jennifer Crisp, Head of Senior School 'The Best Day of the Year' – Senior School Arts DayArts Day Programme
