As a small nation, New Zealanders understand the value of being a team player. Together everyone achieves more. It’s helped us punch above our weight on the world stage – rugby is the obvious and easy example, but there are numerous others in business, technology, the arts, and sport.
Powerful collaboration is also key to achieving the step changes New Zealand needs in education and the environment, and a key driver for NEXT. In this newsletter, we bring you stories about collaboration working to achieve NEXT’s vision for our land and our people.
In the first, NEXT advisor, Māori Trustee and Te Tumu Paeroa CEO Jamie Tuuta shares his insights on philanthropy and kaupapa Maori – are they aligned, or at odds?
We also bring you a story from the NEXT initiative environmental project Jamie chairs, Taranaki Mounga, on how the Taranaki community is working together to transform its mountain – He Kawa Ora – Back to Life.
In education, the NEXT supported Ngā Pumanawa e Waru was recently selected as a finalist for the Westpac Rotorua Business Excellence Awards. Ngā Pumanawa e Waru is using collaborative learning to change Rotorua’s educational landscape.
And we introduce you to a wonderful group of young people I have the privilege of working alongside. The PwC NEXT Young Leaders programme is a collaboration where selected PwC stars are seconded to work with me and NEXT in the world of strategic philanthropy and impact investing – and teach me a thing or two along the way! It’s all about team work!

Kiwi Release and Monitoring on Taranaki Mounga
Taranaki Mounga and Taranaki Kiwi Trust have collaborated to give kiwis released on the Mounga a better chance of survival. Some of the kiwis have been fitted with transmitters to provide valuable information on their whereabouts – and wellbeing.
Ngā Pūmanawa e Waru recognised as Finalist in Rotorua Westpac Business Excellence Awards
Ngā Pūmanawa e Waru – the NEXT supported education initiative helping make Rotorua a great place to learn – was recently recognised as a finalist in the Rotorua Westpac Business Excellence Awards. This initiative is currently engaged with 42 schools, 10 Te Arawa iwi/hapū, eight community groups and several technology partners. Here’s the video they put together for the awards.
