Low Risk of Spill declared in the Murray system

10th October 2018
The Resource Manager for northern Victoria today declared a low risk of spill in the Murray system.

Resource Manager for northern Victoria Mark Bailey said the risk of spill in the Murray system during 2018/19 was now below the 10 per cent threshold needed for a declaration to be made.

“Based on Victoria’s share of the volume held in Lake Hume, the risk of spill is about 5 per cent,” Dr Bailey said.

“Water in spillable water accounts in the Murray system will be made available for use or trade.

“Entitlement holders can view the monthly status of state water shares in Lake Hume and the other Murray storages at the Murray-Darling Basin Authority water sharing page.

“The Resource Manager website also hosts information on the water systems such as resource availability and inflow statistics.”

Dr Bailey said the risk of spill assessment did not describe the chances of flooding in the Murray system this season.

“The risk of spill is a water accounting assessment. It does not refer to flood risks downstream of the storages," Dr Bailey said.

Trading opportunities

Allocation trade from New South Wales to Victoria is limited to the lesser of a net annual volume of 200 GL or a volume that keeps the risk of spill in the Murray system below 50 per cent.

The current risk of spill limit allows 200 GL of net trade from New South Wales to Victoria.

Customers participating in the water trading market can monitor trade availability on the Victorian Water Register website.

Next announcement on risk of spill

The next announcement on the risk of spill and its effect on water availability will refer to the 2019/20 water year.

The first risk of spill assessment in the Murray, Goulburn and Campaspe systems for the 2019/20 season will be announced on Monday July 1, 2019.
