June 2021 No images? Click here Improved footpaths, new cycleways and stormwater upgrades are just some of the 300 projects planned for the next financial year in our $330M Budget. Following strong community support the budget was adopted by Council at the recent ordinary council meeting. We're looking forward to getting to work on it. The first phase of revitalising Hunter Street Mall has begun. The $5M project includes a traditional high street complete with wider footpaths, cycleways and street trees. This is one of Newcastle’s four Priority Projects and part of East End Public Domain Plan Stage 1. We have finalised the concept design for Stage 1 of the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade which focuses on improving the ageing pools and lower promenades. The Newcastle Ocean Baths Community Reference Group (CRG) was integral to this process. Our playground improvement program is continuing and two upgraded play spaces are officially open. Dangar Park, Mayfield and Novocastrian Park, New Lambton are now ready for play. Find a playground near you. Pooches haven't been forgotten either and improvements to the popular off leash area in Islington Park are underway to increase safety for pups and enhance usability of the park. Did you know all our leash free areas are listed on our website? In a world first, works of art never before seen outside of the Torres Strait are on display at the Newcastle Art Gallery in a landmark exhibition. WARWAR: The Art of Torres Strait was developed by Newcastle Art Gallery in collaboration with highly awarded artist and curator Brian Robinson, and it's not to be missed. In another first, the Torres Strait Island flag will now fly permanently at City Hall. It was raised for the first time ever to mark this exhibition opening and in respect of our local Torres Strait community. City lifeguard’s courageous service recognisedMeet Michael Body, he's been a lifeguard with us since 2002 and is one of the City's best watermen. Mick recently received a meritorious service award from the Australian Professional Lifeguard Association for performing two significant rescues in the last year. A local boy from Redhead, this award also recognises Mick's service through his extensive career. Congratulations Mick, this is well deserved and we're so proud you are part of our team. Harbour to Cathedral corridorWe're looking to create a landmark destination for Newcastle that will protect and enhance views from the Harbour through to Christ Church Cathedral. The Harbour to Cathedral concept (originally known as Stairway to Heaven), first developed fifteen years ago by a group of Novocastrian architects, proposes to link Christ Church Cathedral to the Harbour via a grand staircase.
